I can understand why there still might be some happening in NYC or New England, where rich foreign royalty can still show their daughters off to the rest of the international community.

But you would think that this custom would end in places like Texas, North Carolina, Missouri, etc. where Southerners supposedly hate snobby and outdated European practices.

Anyone care to explain ?

They're basically to show off girls who've reached puberty that they're on the dating market. It was historically a way for rich or royal families to arrange marriages.

It became a part of Southern culture because Southern elites arent and werent the same kind of people as your typical Southerner.

Take that fact and let it stew for a couple hundred years and now its just a part of Southern culture in general.

Its still very much a niche thing, but these kinds of things arent strictly the practice of rich elites.
