I have simultaneously heard it's the best and worst Borderlands game. Any consensus?

Wouldn't say it's the worst, definitely not the best. If you like the series it's worth a play through. It's fun, just doesn't have the depth or length of the other games.

eh, it's ok. most of the side characters ranged from forgettable to more annoying than Claptrap. if you have the DLC it's worth playing as Jack for the hilarious dialogue between you and real Jack. the dlc missions aren't great though.

zero gravity was kind of a pain in the ass but the railgun lasers are fun

Most people dont like the story etc, honestly that was never the main draw for me in borderlands.

At all.

I did however have a great deal of fun actually playing it. At the beginning get the mod or whatever its called that restores health on O2 pick up, then never, ever, replace it. Also play as the cyborg with a drone, great fun.

Honestly, out of all four I probably had the most fun with it, even though it is the lowest quality game.

If you like the series, sure. I found it fun, but the story was just okay.

Playing through the story again on True Vault Hunter Mode though? That was amazing and I don't feel like it's talked about enough.

The Pre-Sequel is named that because it takes place after Borderlands 2, but it's a narration of events that happened before Borderlands 2 (so it's both a prequel and a sequel). And in True Value Hunter Mode, the narration is done by Tiny Tina and Brick and the differences are hilarious.

Best character skill trees, worst content. The map design is really bad, and there are barely enough side quests to keep your level. And those side quests are 90% shit.

Claptastic Voyage is pretty good though. If the entire game was up to that quality, it would be great.

It's the only one I haven't bothered to beat. I found the story difficulty to be higher for some reason. The Oz gimmick was kind of obnoxious. Had some really interesting characters to play as though.

Lotta truth in this topic.

It IS the best and the worst.
Worth a play if you liked BL2 since both stories are very Jack-centric.
They somehow created a prominent side character more annoying than main game Tina.
Low gravity is fun.
Lasers are fun.
Story sucks as per usual, but gameplay is good and the areas are pretty decent.

And I like how much dialogue there is for the playable characters. They comment on a lot of stuff and react to characters and side quests they're doing. One of my favorite parts of that game.

It's fine. It has good gameplay, with a cringeworthy story, just like every other Borderlands title. It's great with friends.

I found it somewhat bland and forgettable but it was okay for a playthrough.

The oxygen mechanic wore thin real quick though.

I kinda remember enjoying it, at least more than the cringe-worthy, sophomoric writing in BL2. Some of the mechanics sucked. I don't remember liking it more than BL1, though, which had pretty good DLC. Dunno how it stacks up against BL3.

BL3 has awful writing, but the actual shooting mechanics are a massive step up from Borderlands 2.

If you loved BL2, it's worth a playthrough.

Didn't like the map layout, though.

Honestly the first one was the best and that never changed. 2 had the more entertaining story just because it was less dry in general and I really liked Jack. But the guns have never felt more powerful than in the first game, and the loot was far better. Tons of chests with generous loot all over the place. Then in 2 you had to put Twitter codes in for that same result. I haven't played much of 3 yet but I was still missing those red chests with phat loot.

I don't particularly trust Gearbox with the IP, they strike me as a little inept as a developer in the same way Gamefreak is with Pokmon... It all feels a bit too jank and poorly thought out still after so many years to refine it but they'e selling great anyway so what do I know.

Good:
  • low gravity
  • lasers
  • skill tree synergies
  • Claptrap DLC is solid
Bad:
  • pacing, for both the story and getting additional weapon slots
  • big, empty spaces that serve little purpose
  • non-existent endgame content, just one 'Raid Boss in Name Only' encounter and a secret boss that had its loot drops nuked from orbit

I liked it a lot more than 3. Writing still isn't great, but it's a hell of a lot more tolerable. Characters have fun skill trees too.

Eh, the O2 health pickup kit IS damned good for glass cannons like Nisha.
Protip: Air boost in atmosphere to force a loss of O2 to generate air canisters to restore your health.

That being said, Eddie is a damned good oz kit for higher level characters that have unlocked health sustain in their skill trees.

I use it on Nisha as well, but she had the legendary mod that gave her like 10% life steal while using Showdown.

So basically full health with every bullet.

I usually ran a Desperado COM for Nisha, just to avoid the usual 'deal infinity damage with laser beams during Showdown' builds that most people ran.

I do remember running that cookie cutter build for a bit with the pre-nerf Rosie... you'd simply erase enemies by putting them on the screen for 1-2 frames of gameplay...
