It's an interesting concept, certainly, and I can see what people are getting at, but I'm pretty sure it's wrong. Mental illnesses are not just variations on a theme, and they're generally a negative thing. Most people would not WANT to have a mental, neurological, or developmental disorder. I can't imagine more than a very small number of doctors embrace neurodiversity (except to be polite infront of patients, especially children).

A lot of it is societal. There are some things we consider normal today that were considered mental illnesses in the past. I mean being left handed used to be seen as an illness in the last for god sake.

There may be things we consider weird today that are considered normal in the future. Its best not to get too tied down on labels and treat each person as an individual and not like they are an extension of their mental illnesses.

Aye exactly. And things like ADHD arent necessarily bad on their own. Some of the greatest artists and inventors through history have been accused of having mental illnesses. Im a high functioning autistic and actually it really helps in my day to day job in IT. Gotta own it and make the most of it

Or sociopathy and psychopathy being beneficial traits when it comes to managing big businesses.

This.

There are some conditions that very clearly are going to hold an individual back unless society were to go out of its way to essentially rebuild itself around such people - and possibly, not even then.

But there are also a hell of a lot that... just make people slightly (for lack of a better word, and I don't mean this in a negative way) "weird". Those are hardly an issue in the bigger picture.

And then there's those that might require a little bit of special handling, but for the most part the people can live "normal" lives - essentially the mental equivalent of being in a wheelchair (but otherwise healthy).
