I actually *think* that is the extra month. The original proposal ended in August not September. And the tax free should offset it somewhat.

Obviously still bad and I wouldve preferred the $400 through the end of September but Manchin gonna Manchin I guess. Again his claim of bipartisanship is absurd because republicans wanted only $300 until July so Manchin made things worse to get ZERO republican votes.

I could be wrong but I thought the original proposal ended on August 29? If so, this would be a 1-week extension in exchange for a $100 reduction of the weekly benefit.

I hate that my dad, who got laid off due to Covid and is trying to find a job in his early 60s (not gonna happen) has to deal with this.

Good news! As of last year you are able to file 1040-X amended returns electronically now. If your taxes have finished being processed you can get that started. It will probably still take a few months to process but paper 1040-X returns are so badly backed up that doing it electronically will be much faster.

But you'll need to wait for the original return to finish processing first. Hopefully it already has, but many people made errors when filling and are currently experiencing delays. (Most of the ones I've reviewed have involved people who received their stimulus and then claimed the recovery rebate credit on their taxes because they didn't understand the questions about it which hopefully you did not do)

I would get approximate 1200 additional from last year, but again, how many people will not file the amended return and get lost in the shuffle?

A situation that came up for me last year was that I was apparently owed some very small amount of money (less than 10 bucks I think) because of something having to do with dividends on foreign stock. Because of that, I was forced to pay much more than that to upgrade from the free version of whatever tax software I was using.

Would it have been fine to just have not reported that (since doing so would make my refund smaller rather than larger) to have avoided the larger fee on the software?

No. That would be illegal. But you don't need to buy the software - you can fill out the forms yourself.

Yeah, that's what I saw, but that's reporting on the first one, not the second. All of the reporting I'm finding on the second says "next year" or "end of year," so I have no idea which one it actually is.

Sounds like it might be what I thought initially, that it's retroactive and applies for anybody up through when it ends in September, but I'm hoping to find actual clarification.

EDIT: I'm now finding reports that are literally saying both, so I'm just gonna assume it's last year and half of these news sources have no idea what they're talking about.

Honestly if Manchin hadn't been a complete useless asshole and worsened UI for literally zero reason, I would say the democrats actually handled this fairly well.

Basically this. I'll elaborate:

This is the IMPORTANT INFORMATION that EVERYONE should know.

1) Go to www.irs.gov

2) Click "File your taxes for free"

3) If your income is below 72,000 there will be an option to file your taxes for free. And that's regardless of how complicated they are. The important distinction is that you use the link from this irs.gov page to reach the filing website.

For example, I use TaxAct to file my taxes.

If I went to the TaxAct website directly and set up an account I would definitely be charged to file my taxes.

But instead I click the link on the irs.gov page and so I set up a Free version TaxAct account and they cannot possibly charge me.

Those sites are all required to have a free filing option if you meet certain income requirements (which vary from site to site). But they are not required to make it apparent when you just go directly to their site. So millions of people every year end up paying their software when a couple of extra clicks would have them filing for free.

I mean, this is true, but NOBODY should be filing taxes by mail this year. We are SOOOO backed up that you are adding months of potential delay by filing by mail currently.

But if you do want to file by mail and you have enough of an understanding to fill out the forms yourself (which is honestly not that hard if you go line by line and refer to the 1040 instructions if you get confused) then you can use the "Free File Fillable Forms" page on irs.gov to populate the forms and then print them out.
