You tell them instead of ce. Unless it is some near minimum job, then you decide if you want a job or vacation

Tell them you need to give previous employers two week notice before joining. Could be risky if they are looking for a hire right away.

I just hired someone and while on the phone to informally offer them the position they told me they couldnt start for 4 weeks. I said ok. Thats fine. No big deal. IMO this is a good time to talk about that stuff.

Then a few days later they called back and said they wanted four days off in the first month to go on a vacation.

Im not changing my mind on hiring them because it would take too long to hire someone else but the second call left a bad impression. Even before this person starts Im focusing on flaws and second guessing myself. Its not something they cant overcome but its not a great first look.

It would have been much better if they told me about the vacation at the same time we were talking about their start date. Its much better to call and ask the to wait until they stated though.

After they give you the offer, but before you say yes ask them the start date. If it doesnt match then tell them that you are intersted but already have a vacation planned and ask if the start date can be moved to whatever date you need.

Everyone is a human so they will understand you have human needs and want to take some time off before starting. As long as it is not like months there shouldnt be any problems.

I guess I could do that. would it be better to set on salary before mentioning start date?

everyone expects two weeks in the corporate world, it's just that I will be on vacation for two weeks so I can't exactly give my notice now and then take a vacation until my termination

Yes. I imagine they would want to straighten that all out at the same time.

Most places would give you an offer that had all the details about compensation, for you to accept, and the start date would either be part of that offer or come from discussions after it.

I suggest you just discuss it when they present the offer in a respectful way. I appreciate the offer and really am looking forward to getting started but I do have a few things to discuss first. I need to provide my current job with notice and have a vacation coming up. How does this (fill in the blank with time details) work for you?

They offered me the job

they shut down my negotiation attempts quick :( no other options so I have to accept

they said a 4/1 start date is ideal but they could make 4/16 work. so I'm mulling whether to go for the easier, later date or cut bait early and put in a notice now for 4/1.
