BotW is obviously the best-selling Zelda game so that's going to have some influence. It takes place 10,000 years after whatever the last game in the timeline is. And I know, those aren't great reasons in themselves to think this but you gotta wonder if they themselves are tired of making the same formulaic game.

BotW is the natural evolution of the series. "traditional" zelda is just stagnation.

Not to be that guy, but it's more than the era of traditional Zelda games is finally back.

Breath of the Wild has much more in common with the original legend of Zelda and A Link to the past then the modern 3D games have to them.

I felt like BoTW was very much in the spirit of Zelda games. Idk why people think it's some sort of giant deviation.

I agree, I loved the hell out of it. That's exactly why I'm wondering if traditional ones are going to be phased out.

It's a deviation from the 3D Zelda formula and a lot of people only played games released after OoT

No, you're right. That completely slipped my mind that those were far more open than later ones.

The rewards for exploration for pretty uninteresting in the older ones tbh. Even though the weapons break, that's still more unique and rewarding than heart pieces or rupees.

And since exploring the world is my favorite part about Zelda, I preferred the shrines to dungeons. I wouldn't mind some aspects coming back, but I like this format better.

God let's hope not

BotW was okay but not the best Zelda game

A Link Between Worlds is a 10/10 game, and the best Zelda period

BotW was great, but I want a return of real progression. Even in Zelda 1 there were places and secrets you couldnt access without finding the appropriate item.

Let me find an item that lets me feel oh, great, I can go back to ____ and see what that was all about.

and dungeons, too. Places like Eventide Island and that pitch Black Forest were some oh shit moments when you found them, but their impact is lessened because you dont have to overcome them.

I want that same oh shit moment when I find a dungeon, followed by a feeling of dread like well, I guess I gotta do this.

I want a balance of the two. Traditional and the free exploration of BotW. Keep the free world to explore, but give us actual dungeons, bosses and useful items other than the sheikah slate.

I think the problem with the shrines is more the shrines themselves. Finding them and unlocking them worked out really well with what Breath of the Wild was going for. But when it comes to actually doing them, I can see why some may have been disappointed. I do want shrines to return in BOTW2 because I enjoyed them, but I think they need to cut back on how many they include.

As far as dungeons go, I think the ideal scenario is that they go for multiple styles. Hyrule Castle was an excellent dungeon because it perfectly reflected what Breath of the Wild is all about. There should be more like those. Dungeons with a theme of exploration that you can drop in and out of at any time. But I don't think it's a bad idea to include a couple traditional dungeons as well. Or maybe even a puzzle-focused dungeon like the Divine Beasts. It might be asking for too much, but I want to see them mix things up.

I also want to see the Sheikah Slate return because I enjoyed using the Runes. However, I think it's another case where they don't have to go for strictly one style. There's no reason Link can't have a couple physical tools as well. A grappling hook or hookshot for instance.
