Look at Oasis's second album - today it's seen as a bombastic cocaine-fueled monument to excess with a distinct lack of elegance and depth compared to What's The Story, Morning Glory, but at the time it was getting 9s and 10s because critics had missed the boat on that first album. They overcorrected for the second album, and it turned around and bit them in the ass. That album was overrated at the time, and its reputation soured the longer it was allowed to gestate and sit with people on the shelf. You also have Crash, an intense movie about race relations in Los Angeles, which won an Oscar over Brokeback Mountain. Nowadays it's seen as obnoxious, shallow and over-acted, while Brokeback Mountain continues to resonate with audiences for its great performances and story. Few people would be pressed to say that Crash is a better movie than Brokeback Mountain. Meanwhile, you have media that defies the odds and becomes a pop-cultural mainstay despite getting middling or devastating critical reviews upon its release. Night of the Living Dead was shredded by critics, but it was a hit among horror fans and it established its reputation over the course of a decade. Earthbound is notorious for how much of a sacred cow it is despite reviewing and selling horribly. The terms can be used very loosely to say "I think this thing that lots of people think is good is actually bad" or vice versa, but media that fails to live up to critical reception or which establishes itself as a cultural mainstay over a period of years or decades does exist.
