For me it is any timed event or get to _________ in Blah amount of time to progress the story. I am fine with it being for something on the side or extra, but not if the story stops unit its completed.

When it starts tough and then kinda resets and lets you build your skills.
Timed events are a general turn off for me cause it gives me anxiety, even if it is a ten minute timer but levels only take like two minutes.

I'll always give a game a shot, but those things make me put down games a bit faster.

Yeah this. Borderlands 3 was insufferable.

Nowadays I have trouble with more anime-y games that do the whole grunting and constant awkward dialogue thing. Gameplay wise, I don't care for games that are so complicated that you need tutorials still many hours into the experience

a similar thing that I cant stand is when you have to constantly mash a button to get your character to do mundane things like turn a crank or push something. Or how youd have to mash a button to get Kratos to open doors in some early God of War games. That kinda thing.

I'd stay away from .hack//GU, in that case - more than once throughout the games you're required to mash buttons to reduce damage to your character

Good question! For me it's a game that is pay to win. When the importance of skill and experience is made trivial in favor of a big wallet, that's a huge deal breaker for sure. The same type of game that constantly tries to pull cash from you for every little thing, without limit. Gambling gacha games. They all do it to some degree or another, but I want none of it.

Escort missions where the companion A.I. functions on the level of a preschooler.

Games which "increase difficulty" by simply ramping up the damage dealt to you and lowering your health to the point that two hits kills you.

As for future dealbreakers, if they ever make another BloodRayne game and don't bring back Laura Bailey, I will not buy it.

Quite a few

  • Soulsborne clones
  • Rougelikes (very rarely it can be done well but overall I hate "roll of the dice" games since you can't really plan ahead)
  • RTS/tactical games (John Wick Hex is a perfect example. It would've been perfect in the style of Max Payne or Hotline Miami but instead they went with tactical)
  • Games that have speedrun trophies
  • Missables
  • Games where you can't fully level up/upgrade your character. I was recently playing Monster Sanctuary and looking at a guide that says you can't fully upgrade all skills which is a huge letdown. It's one thing if you have to forget a move ie Pokemon or NNK but it's annoying not being able to fully upgrade

  1. Games that dont have minimaps. I dont give a shit about your fake ass "realism", I would love to know where I'm going and where I've been without backtracking a million times or having a spreadsheet out.
  2. Backtracking. Sometimes it's okay, if its connected to a story arc. Most times it's horrible (I always reference Metriod Prime for this example).
  3. Collectables. It's just boring game padding. It's not fun to collect random shit that barely has anything to do with the game. More power to you if you enjoy it.
  4. Escort missions.
  5. Walking and talking parts where you just slowly saunter near a NPC talking. Just make it a cutscene.
  6. Boss fights that you win but "lose" in a cutscene. Pointless.
  7. Bullet sponges. If you don't know how to make your game challenging don't make the boss just have an insane hp pool, unless its story related.
  8. 3 player squads. What the fuck is this about? 4 players has always been the normal but now so many games have a 3 player limit.
  9. Region locking.
  10. Weapon durability

Dude I wanted to like The Division but this one point killed the enjoyment for me.

A game like Destiny where you're fighting robots and armored aliens I can kinda give a pass like "Okay maybe it takes a dozen laser space grenades to down a 16-foot tall robot hippo" but when I'm emptying 3 magazines into some schlub in a hoodie in a game that's largely based in the real world it sucks all the enjoyment out

That's one of the worse things. Also a minimap that doesn't display everything correctly. Such as only displaying the surrounding area and not the fully area if you want to plan which path to take for example.

Time limits, not being able to get every skill in an RPG eventually. It's fine if for most of the game you are going to be playing with a build, as long as I know I can eventually get everything. I hate not being able to. Weapon durability is also ass.

I'm fine if the collectibles have intrinsic value to them or reasonable reward tiers but I know what you mean. Sucks when they are just there for bragging rights, or maybe you get a huge reward when you collect 100/100 but there's no in between and by the time you can finish you've basically beaten the game already

I can't really think of much that hasn't been mentioned. Uhh... mandatory boss rushes? I love Mega Man but this is always my least favorite part, just pointless padding. Especially bad when it's the same level as the final boss and you have to do the whole rush again if you get a game over.

Oh, speaking of game overs/saving in fortresses in MM, games that haven't inconsistent save/checkpoints. Like in those you can save at every level until you get to the fortress and sometimes can't save in the middle even though it's made up of different levels. Not even talking about trying to exploit/save scum, sometimes I just want to break up the game sessions. It's not adding anything to the difficulty, just making me play parts in one sitting.

More of a meta thing, but indie "retro" games and spiritual successors can be a pet peeve, but I like some of them. I can't explain where I draw the line but I'm sure you've all had that moment where you see a game like this and think "god it's so fucking cliche"
