Pants are trousers when using the Northern American version of pants and shorts are short trousers. Obviously boxer shorts are underwear though so not all shorts are trousers. On that note "pants" to me reffers to underpants and those are underwear.

Did people have these moronic "Is X actually Y?" discussions before the internet? Phylogeny applies to organisms and nothing else. Shorts are called shorts because they're shorts. There's no secret evolutionary history to discover "oh wow, shorts are actually more related to socks than pants!" They're clothes, you dolt. Same thing applies to "Is cereal soup" or "is a hot dog a sandwich" or whatever.

I call trousers pants (only old people use trousers here) and shorts "short pants". That's more used for things like cutoff jeans. Normal shorts are shorts.

I believe the stipulation for pants is that they are lower body ware that cover from the waist to the ankle, ruling out shorts. And have separate legs, ruling out skirts.

but thats technically relative to the person wearing them.
So are shorts pants? Technically the answer is they could be.

So not quite pants.

Isn't it funny you call it a pair of pants despite it being a singular item?

Like a pair of socks makes sense, cause there is 2, but is it appropriate to say a pair of underwear?
