Hereditary is a fine film as I mentioned earlier but I don't get as hyped about it as others do. In my opinion it excels at being a mainstream horror film with high artistic flair but the commitment to mainstream also holds it back at the same time (Midsommar didn't have this problem). I have nothing but the highest of praise for the performances however!

As for The Lighthouse, again great film on technical levels and metaphorical detail, I actually like it more on every rewatch but there's something about I don't quite love. I think it's like the opposite of Hereditary where events are portrayed in too many layers of fantasy that make it more impenetrable than it has to be.

Yes I'm a fickle beast.

Also while I'm here sorry I haven't done any of these in awhile, I haven't had any real internet access for the past few days and that will continue for at least a little while longer.

I felt Midsommar felt far more of a mainstream movie than Hereditary did, mostly because all of the plot points are extremely obvious to see and follow standard "people in a foreign place" tropes.

But then I think Midsommar is an insufferable movie that has a brilliant first 15 minutes and last 15 minutes and then 2 hours of absolutely nothing worth watching in the middle.

That was the whole point. It's a break-up movie, among many other things, disguised as a folk horror film.

Please don't explain this movie like I didn't understand it. It's not very subtle of a film with the overall story. But making 2 hours of a movie an absolute boring chore to sit through doesn't make it any better by acting like it's subversive.
