LOS ANGELES (AP) A cat that went astray about 15 years ago has been reunited, older and maybe wiser, with its owner.
Brandy, a brown tabby, was reunited Monday afternoon with Charles, who adopted her as a 2-month-old kitten in 2005.
Its amazing. I think its unbelievable, he said Thursday.
I saw her, I picked her up and she started to purr and it was very emotional, Charles said. It was nice to have her in my arms again.
I did break down and cry because I thought about all of the years I lost from her, he said.
Brandy was found Sunday in Palmdale, about 40 miles (65 kilometers) from where Charles lives in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles.

The computer technician, who didnt want his last name used, said Brandy strayed only a few months after he adopted her.
She went outside in the afternoon to our backyard, he said. But when it got dark and he went to bring her inside, she wasnt there.
Charles drove around looking for her, checked animal shelters and put up signs without any luck.
I was very sad, he said. I wanted her back because when I adopted her I made a moral obligation to take care of her for her life.
He feared she had been killed by a car or a coyote.
But I was hoping someone would take her off the streets to take care of her, and I guess thats what happened, he said.
Charles went on with his life. He moved to another place in the Valley and adopted two younger cats.
Then on Sunday, he received a call from the Los Angeles County animal shelter in Palmdale and another from the company that made a microchip implanted in Brandy when she was adopted.
Charles had changed his address and home phone. But luckily, his cellphone number was the same as that listed on the microchip.
I was skeptical. I thought, must be a mistake, Charles said. Maybe theres a 1-in-a-million chance its Brandy. But after 15 years, its highly unlikely PS4 looks great.
Still, I said, yeah, the microchip wouldnt lie.

On Monday afternoon, he went to Palmdale to look at Brandy. She was older and very skinny, he said.
Brandy needed a little help: She was malnourished and weighed only 6 pounds.
She basically weighed as much as when she was a kitten, Charles said.
Her nails had grown long enough to wound her paws.
Charles suspects that somebody found her as a kitten and kept her all those years without bothering to check whether she had a microchip. He believes she must have become separated or run off several months ago. But she was the same calm, gentle, sweet cat he remembered, Charles said. Charles decided he couldnt keep Brandy in his one-bedroom apartment with two younger cats. But Brandy is staying with his sister nearby, and he intends to visit often.
She doesnt have a lot of energy. But she seems very content, Charles said. She purrs a lot.
She seems to be happy to have a home again.

Sometimes they do just go somewhere else. I've seen cats that ran off around other places in my neighborhood

Why you shouldnt have outdoor cats

I dunno I grew up with two kitties who loved hunting in the orchard and grew up indoor/outdoor cats.

One lived to 23 and one was at least 15 and neither one died till my dad moved into the city and they didn't have the orchard anymore.

The older cat was my cat since I was born. I moved out at 17 and obviously couldn't take her away from there... but then 6 years later she had to leave the orchard anyways and she just immediately hid in a closet and waited to die. It was so sad.

Cats will always be healthier and happier kept inside. Just because they ask to go out every once in a while doesnt mean they need to be kept outdoors. Letting them in the backyard under supervision every once in a while is ok tho

They both lived to old age and died when they lost that freedom. Shiloh would leave decapitated mice and shrews on the front step and k2 would get stuck on the roof every day chasing squirrels. They were happy as any cats could be.

There is a risk and given that my cat has grown up an apartment kitty who only goes out on a leash and gets let off in safe spaces hes obviously not gonna be an outdoor cat. But cats are hunters.

If they have a safe space to be out in and you watch them and gradually let them out more you should do it afaic.

Also my cat comes down to the beach and goes off leash and explores and hunt and stuff and stays near me. He loves it. I feel bad when I dont get him out and let him check out beavers and hunt and stuff.

The risks and dangers vastly outweigh any positives when letting a cat roam free outside (not to mention them crapping on other people's property). Personally I stick to letting them out on the balcony or on a leash.

Sometimes they do just go somewhere else. I've seen cats that ran off around other places in my neighborhood

The cat that lives with the people I rent a room from does that.

She's chipped and has a number on her collar.

People has called wanting to keep her.

The owners will say "No" but she can still go where she wants and she's everyones cat.

She also likes to get into peoples cars if she sees a open door.

Seen people at the next door Church push her out.

Makes people here worry that if someone doesn't see her in the car then she could die in the hot months.

This. We only let our cats out if they had a leash on. And even then it couldn't let them out of the yard.
