Def Leppard pretty much started the new wave of British Heavy Metal in the 80s. Pure arena rock with little more than pop hooks. Not real metal at all.

Whether Def Leppard is real metal or not is irrelevant

What matters is that they totally suck

I don't mind them if I'm feeling saccharine. They remind me of old hair metal that my dad used to spin back in the day: Bon jovi, Alice Cooper, Poison, White Snake, etc.

bro you said a def leppard album is the best metal album in a decade known for music that metalheads bust nuts over

I understand your point.

But from my experience metalheads are THE most exclusionary music fans.

strongly disagree, and also since you regularly make topics like this my guess is you have little to no exposure to metal as a whole

The damn thing is a hit machine. Which means hardcore metallers need to treat it like crap because it isn't a deep cut sub genre album. Nothing wrong with liking Mercyful Fate or Death or Candlemass alongside Def Leppard.

On the flip side, why is metal the only genre where people insist that bands that clearly arent metal should be categorized that way?

its not about being exclusionary or anything. Its just about being accurate. Imo

I've got some bad news for you about classical, jazz, folk, punk, and hip hop fans

Dont get me wrong, I think its really stupid how much 70s rock fans hated on disco back then. This theme was used a lot in punk songs from that era even.

But I dont know of any music fans that hate a subgenre of their favorite music (and call it not really that music on top of that) as much as metalheads do.

Had Bonham not died when he did, Zep was likely to head that way. Page and Plant both dipped into hair-metally stuff, and Jones mostly just disappeared into production and sessions.

Of course, hair metal was all just a bad pastiche of Zeppelin anyway.

This topic, man...

First of all, Def Leppard started as heavy metal not too dissimilar from Iron Maiden, but already by the early eighties, their sound was turning softer and lighter, and by the time of their Hysteria album, their music had become poppy arena rock comparable to that of Toto, Survivor and Journey. Personally, though, I like both heavy metal and AOR.

Anyhow, by the mid seventies, most heavy metal acts that sprung up at the beginning of the decade had changed into prog or pop rock bands, or called it quits. Black Sabbath's best days were in the past and they were now limping on in a debilitating mist of drug and alcohol problems. However, future heavy metal star Judas Priest had established itself... as a competent but unimpressive blues/hard rock band whose debut album was a flop. Heavy metal was... dying.
Meanwhile, the artistic pinnacle that was prog rock was becoming a banal parody of itself. Enter punk rock, a simple, fast, aggressive, raw, DIY type of rock.
"That's a nice history lesson and all, but what has this got to do with heavy metal?" I hear you asking.
Well, suffice to say, many small UK bands who performed in pubs (incidentally, taking cues from country, hard rock, and rock & roll to create a stripped-down genre known as pub rock), picked up this new "punk" sound and incorporated it into their own. However, pub rockers with one foot in heavy metal turned the slow and ponderous metal into fast and pounding metal.
Thus, the New Wave of British Heavy Metal had begun!

Nah, Def Leppard is legitimately an awful fucking band. How you could even think such a pack of wannabees made the best metal album in the 80's is an absolutely horrible take. You should be ashamed of yourself.

This sounds an awful lot like the soliloquy that goes with the documentary titled A Metalhead's Journey. A fascinating documentary on the origins of metal, and all of its regional offspring.
