With covid, people should be staying home as much as possible anyways. If this is temporary and if this has been a problem getting worse, I don't see the problem.

You dont see the problem with a curfew on half the population due to the actions of some piece of shit rapist scumbags?

You think a rapist is gonna abide by curfew or curtail their urges due to a curfew?

If anything this would probly just ensure that there are less decent men out who might be able to intervene when some rapist attacks a lady.

No they didn't. One peer mentioned it very briefly in a speech. She said she *might* propose an amendment (reading between the lines, only if not enough else is done in the bill to tackle this issue), which would have virtually zero support, and the Tory majority in the Commons would strip it out anyway, in the unlikely event it passed.

Why are women even out after 6pm? Opposing arguments are open to the floor.

I understand why such a proposal by just description would be considered offensive (as it should, it would be sexist), but this does not even sound plausible anyway. Virtually unlikely to ever pass. It just sounds like another controversial proposal to grab political attention and not intended to actually pass.

Genuinely trying to restrict the rights of citizens based on sex would be greatly discriminatory and set back civil rights. It would also obstruct an enormous amount of the necessary local workforce that are vital for keeping nations running (particularly blue collar "dirty jobs" that are taken for granted). It would also impede on their rights to earn living wages and would impact underprivileged men the most. It would be laughable to present that as any way progressive and just...

I suspect that is the point the "proposal" is being used to make. It would equally discriminatory towards men AND women.

And if you're still worried about it being taken seriously, there's a sleeper factor that would make it nearly impossible to pass in the current UK: it would quantifiably debunk the commonplace feminist narrative of a discriminatory gender wage gap towards women because 95% of men could never make as much as even the average woman if their available work hours had such a substantial cut enforced by government. Even the man-haters with a seat can piece together why that would be shooting themselves in the foot.

Don't lose any sleep over this.

Yeah, that's the way I took it. I think she was getting at the fact that when things like this happen, women are often told to adjust *their* behaviour, e.g. by not going out at night. By highlighting how idiotic that seems when applied to men instead, she's trying to get us to realize how wrong it is when it's the other way round, so that the issue might be taken more seriously in future.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I have seen the above point brought up by several women.

Why would anybody nowadays need to read A Modest Proposal? What a dumb thing to be pretentious about.

"Wait, you mean critical satire exists? How would I EVER know unless I, personally, read A Modest Proposal, a piece of critical satire dated to a very specific period of history without any real relevance to the issues of the modern day?! In the last two and a half centuries there has never been another piece of satire written by human hands and thus, without having read A Modest Proposal For preventing the Children of Poor People From being a Burthen to Their Parents or Country, and For making them Beneficial to the Publick to provide some sort of landmark reference, navigating such a task would seem a Herculean, nay, Sisyphean, NAY, Ungodly task!"

Or some such, idk
