Initially it took a couple months but then after the first rejection I had teaching and the rewrite took a while because we had to figure out a bunch of theoretical proofs. My tip is to do research with an academic institution and publish your results. Yes, I had an editor, but his job was mostly to find reviewers and then assess their critique. Not only do you typically have to pay journals to publish in them, the reviewers are other academics working for free. So we pay to publish, and review other people's work for the journals for free.
