can't believe this guy would do this after all he went through all those years ago when he was targeted. you'd think he would have learned his lesson. this French guy just doesn't learn

This is very much of a "too soon" situation

If Floyd had been ten years ago I doubt anyone would care, it's pretty typically to draw on imagery like that

That said, the art and joke look like shit, is this really what passes for professional cartoonism?

---
I have no idea whether or not he's a racist, but apparently there are recordings of him using racial slurs so it's a distinct possibility.

tbh, Charlie Hebdo has made its name through edgy shitlord comedy so it's unsurprising.

Just tossing this out there -- Charlie Hebdo is a publication, not an artist. I'm not sure that the artist for that particular image was working for the publication at the time. However, the artists clearly did learn since they're not terribly likely to suffer an attack as a result of this publication. It'll rile up BLM supporters, but because they're a sea away it's not like Charlie Hebdo is at serious risk of being attacked as a result of this.

I can't read the french so I don't know if the comparison is intentional or not

Why did Meghan leave Buckingham? "Because I can't breathe!"

Honestly surprised Charlie Hebdo didn't do a George Flyod comic immediately after his death, they are tasteless.

There's no amount of time that could go by that would make this comparison ok.

What the actual fuck?

Portraying some spoiled rich actress that literally married into royalty not getting along w/ her in laws and fleeing to some mansion across the pond as being murdered like George Floyd was should ALWAYS be disgusting.

Honestly, I kind of get what they were going for. The royal family's racism toward Markle comes off as particularly egregious and tone-deaf because of how prominent anti-racism sentiments are right now (at least in North America), and drawing a parallel highlights that. It's obviously still in pretty poor taste, but it gets the point across.

After the caption was explained, it kinda felt like they were swiping in the other direction -- suggesting that Markle's accusations (which I haven't really followed) were over-dramatic. Mostly for the reasons that Stream explained, in that the comparison is beyond hyperbolic and the drawing of that contrast kind of highlights how petty the royal spat is compared to the much larger problems elsewhere.

you underestimate the passage of time. People will absolutely be making "I can't breathe jokes" with no controversy within our lifetimes. South Park claims it's ten years but in this environment it'll probably be like thirty or so.

This is way too soon though.

Also worth noting that a schoolgirl got canceled for making a joke about his death just a few weeks ago.

Actually, come to think of it, why does Charlie Hebdo never get canceled? Does France not do that shit? You'd think irate people would force newsstands to stop carrying the magazine, banks from loaning the company (and its employees) money, etc.

Also a valid interpretation, though it's pretty hard to argue that "we're concerned that a 1/4-black child of a pasty ginger and a slightly tanned woman might be too black to be royalty" isn't blatantly racist, and that's not something anyone should have to deal with regardless of how good the rest of their life is.
