I love that game. Firecracker and spamming block can probably help you if really get stuck but it's more fun not to do that.

On the standard difficulty (you can't choose to make it harder until you beat the game once) there is very little punishment for hitting block at the wrong time. So you can kinda just mash block and you will end up deflecting 70% or so of all attacks and usually not be punished for the 30% you only block. Completely defeats the purpose of combat which is to learn moves and time your blocks but it works.

After you beat the game, you unlock the option to give back kuro's charm in the beginning that fixes this by making you take massive chip damage if you only block instead of deflect.

Works better against some bosses compared to others. How far did you make it before you quit last time?

She is probably the hardest boss in the first half of the game or so. Took me quite a lot of tries on my first playthrough. Especially rough cause you can get there pretty early and have almost no upgrades.

The DLC is like the best part of Bloodborne, it has the best 3 bosses in the game and almost doubles the amount of weapons.

The thing that got me was how much dodging did not work. Once I learned to stop dodging and block (almost) everything, I did pretty well.

Having got a Platinum in Sekiro but only just finishing Dark Souls 1 very recently I'd say the main difference is just being really aggressive. Seems like Souls games rely a bit more on stamina management and not overextending while Sekiro you really benefit from stepping hard on the gas and not letting up. Overwhelming and staggering enemies kills them way more quickly and safely than weaving around them and poking them.

Dodging does actually work pretty well, just not for every attack. It's the primary way to get openings to deal health damage though. In an ideal situation you dodge in the first half or so of the fight and counter to deal hp damage and then deflect and attack their guard in the 2nd half to raise and break their posture. A lot of times you need to deflect the combo opener and dodge a follow up though and obviously some enemies are more about deflecting and some more about dodging.
