HOAs should be illegal

I hate HOAs but unless you can't find affordable housing in an area, why should they be illegal?
Infact, affordable homes usually not in an HOA.

When I was looking for a place, I literally couldn't find anything without an HOA >_> it covers my water/sewage/garbage tho so its not too bad I guess

Get involved, if you can. My old HOA had been up to some serious embezzlement for years and it was only uncovered when more people started paying attention and getting involved after shit like this kept happening.

No HOA is my #1 requirement for a new house.

Sounds a little sus to me

Ive lived in my condo for 3 years now and they only raised the rate once from 230 to 250. The question of raising the rate only comes up once a year for my HOA and it stays the same for the entire calendar year, with notice of the increase given in advance

So who's going to take care of the exterior maintenance of condos?

HOA's have always hit me weird. Generally the people in them are super conservative and talk about how important property rights and things are then willing submit to something that is very much in contrast to those values.

That being said the entire reason HOA's exist was because those same people wanted to keep out PoC so I shouldn't be surprised.

HOAs are pretty necessary for Townhome and Condo complexes. Since they usually take care of the groundkeeping and trash disposal and upkeep of amenities, etc.

For subdivisions, there's less need for them I agree. Though one argument for them is they help protect your home value since the presentation of neighboring homes will affect the selling value of your home and HOAs make sure homes don't have 2 ft tall grass and visible damage that goes ignored.

On the other hand HOAs can get pretty power hungry and cite you for not putting your dumpsters in the exact area (I've heard people get cited for being like a couple of feet away from the edge of the driveway instead of right at the edge, which is BS). And of course continually raise the rates.

It isnt normal. We just threw out the guy running our HoA for this crap.

You should talk to your neighbirs and get a bunch to a meeting. Then ask what the increase is for? And why it goes up? And how much more?

I've dealt with a few HOAs, from a small 3 owner HOA to 100+ owners, and every time it has been very easy to get a detailed breakdown of the budget every year and see exactly where all the money is going. HOAs are required to keep meeting minutes for every HOA meeting too, so you can easily get access to those and look back to see exactly what was discussed at every meeting, I am sure they mentioned these price increases in them. Also most the time it is very easy to get involved in the HOA on committees or join the board in general
