I've been thinking about this a decent bit. I think it's a bit odd that people watch a lot of these programs. To each their own, but I think they're disturbing. I usually already know all the info that people are talking about because I read it in 1/8th the time and didn't have to listen to breathless explanations of their crimes.

People will always be fascinated by the extremes of humanity. I find real life stories about death, murder, disappearance, war, conflict, etc. inherently interesting myself, but I do think there's a tonal balance to be struck when covering these sorts of stories. Is the intent to exploit or inform? For example, I think a lot of docuseries and programs that cover unsolved crimes can bring fresh attention and eyes to the case, which in turn can translate to actual traction. But there's also a lot of series made solely to exploit a story for that sweet sweet True Crime $$$$. It's a mixed bag.

i used to be really into true crime type stuff, but i realized it was giving me really bad anxiety and i stopped. just thinking about horrible things happening to people, very often women, isn't a great headspace to be in lol

I never watch that kind of stuff. It just doesn't interest me and a lot of people are incredibly sick.

Most real serial killers or predators don't actually seem that engaging to me honestly. They're just fucked up loner dudes who can't even commit interesting murders.

There's a certain interest level, especially because it helps you protect yourself against similar creeps. However, a whole fucking series is often overkill. A 20-40 minute program is enough.

i listen to quite a bit but only in the background usually while playing some video game. that way you don't get very annoyed at the needlessly long convoluted dive into details or entire sub-plots that end up being nothing.

JCS is probably the only medium in this genre that I actively watch and while I don't agree all the time with their conclusions i find it fascinating.

There's a good one on Netflix called A Murder Among the Mormons that's pretty interesting. It's about events from the 80s in Utah.

It's not a genre I really care for. The murder ones don't bother me very much, but ones on sexual assault can be hard to watch for me.

I just remembered I am subscribed to one guy who talks about this kind of stuff but he use to do other content like paranormal videos before seeming to have exclusively gone to serial killers and stuff like that.

Awareness is always good on these subjects. If you already know the things you're being told that's great. Some however need to be enlightened.

That's actually a common trend for YouTubers who cover "spooky" of "creepy" subjects. They often pivot to murders and disappearances once they run out of more unique stories.

I'm always a bit less confident about the research on YT videos (although nowadays some of it is licensed by the same kind of guys who sold content to TV... which isn't always saying much given the crap the History Channel would put on the air), but yeah, there are a lot of channels that present the information in a succinct and entertaining manner. In fact, when I made the comment I was specifically thinking of the channel Biographics which I'd started watching for a number of biographies lately (and not just serial killer ones).

Some of them are fine/interesting, but every once in a while you run into one that's particularly tasteless/tacky with reenactments or nasty comments at the expense of someone involved.

One can skip to the end and get caught-up, or Google the names and read about it in more detail, probably. Ive searched a number of things (they) cant show and found them online.

I watch a lot of these kinds of shows, but some are pretty bad. Theres a Canadian one called Crime Beat that showcases some pretty serious ones in Canada. Not sure if I can go into detail here, but the last one involved a garbage bag over someones head and a hammer. Not getting into who the someone was, but that one was hard to listen to.
