Current Events > So.. apparently my mom is planning a 15 member thanksgiving at my house...

The house thing is a little complicated. My brother and I are suppose to be taking over their old house and have it put under our names. We have been paying the mortgage for over a year now but COVID has delayed our names being put on it. So my parents are still paying taxes on the house currently. (They live in another state) They want 15 people to come over for Thanksgiving, then we all go to Disney World. She is even considering renting a 15 person van so we can all ride together. She is also demanding I take off during that time.

This entire situation seems petty fucked. Yes, quite a few of us have the vaccine but are we really just going to ignore covid completely and have big group activities? Why are you planning all of this and where to we are having it without asking us? Does paying the taxes on the house overrule who is paying the mortgage? Clearly, if I deny this Ill be racked through the coals by my family since Im not super outgoing to begin with.

I feel like Im in a shit situation

Cases are already down, and vaccines are starting to roll out quicker and in greater quantity. Even if you don't think the pandemic as a whole will be over in 8 months, it's entirely likely that his entire family will have the vaccine by then, so it's fine to gather.

Its March, not August.

If it was late summer and we were at the spot were at with vaccines, TC would have a point to be worried. Its too early to be worrying like he is though.

If you're that worried and afraid then just talk to them about it. Vaccine or not, nothings guaranteed, and theres all sorts of others places, people and things they can contract the virus from.

I thought there was talk about needing an x amount of people vaccinated for herd immunity and the worry of stronger strands emerging that the vaccine cant stop. The herd immunity is a really high percentage that America probably wont reach because of antivaxers right?

That only matters if your concern is about spreading it to other unvaccinated people. If your whole family is vaccinated you will be safe. Other people might not be but that's on them for going to fucking Disneyland unvaccinated.

It's easy enough to assume things will be fine by then. And if things suddenly get worse, you'll have plenty of time in September or October to raise an issue with it. If this was something to do with Easter or Memorial Day, you'd have more of a point.

The CDC has already adjusted guidelines saying it's okay for vaccinated people to gather in groups without masks. So there's a pretty strong reason to think exactly that

I don't know what the fuck backwater state you live in, but there are already tons of families in my state that are fully vaccinated or almost to their second shot. 15 isn't that large, and it's incredibly unlikely that those 15 won't be vaccinated by Thanksgiving unless they choose to not be. Stop fearmongering.

We're half way through March and we've already administered 110 million vaccines. You'll be fine.

depends on the percentage of trumpanzee's and anti-vaxxer's. if it's a contributor of more than 30% of the population it's razor thin margins it can be reached. vaccine is supposed to be widely available by may to july (worse case scenario) we'll all be safe at least from ending up with severe symptoms with vaccine.

i'm hopeful some sense of normal can happen after the summer.

I think things will be pretty good by summer if vaccine rollout continues to move along and improve. I can see wearing masks in public until next year still even so, but I think it's just going to continue getting better, barring states doing stupid shit like Texas opening too early.

Mostly normal - no masks, reduced capacity events - August 2021

The vaccine is not a guarantee

Edit: To expand, it really only makes sense to gather if everyone is vaccinated and overall cases are down. If there are a lot of cases, it's reckless to gather even if everyone is vaccinated. There's no indication cases will be low enough to have a large thanksgiving. We'll see.
