I kind of want to get one but I don't want to deal with that problem.

I asked this a couple weeks ago, consensus was 'yes'

I bought this to amend the issue: https://i.imgur.com/rx1CxJ9.jpg (much better for my large hands as well)

I only play in handheld mode fwiw

Hm. Not too interested in handheld play. Are the pro controllers good? If I'm going to buy something to go along with it, I might as well do that.

Pro controllers are considered among the best modern controllers AFAIK, but I haven't tried one

I use this (also works on PC)

Absolutely love it. Also has an insane battery life

Pro controllers are nice, but the DPad sucks ass. Have to open it up and use tape to modify it so it functions properly. I've never had the joycon drift issue on my original Switch that I've had for a year or two (I traded my old one in for the revised one for the battery life plus new joycons), but my gf's Switch just started the drift issue a few months ago. I bought her her Switch shortly before the revised one was announced. She didn't even play it that much and it developed the drift issue. I'd wager and say she has less than 200 or maybe even 100 hours on her Switch. And half of that might have been with my pro controller.

Can pro controllers charge while you use them? Thats my biggest complaint about the joycons, that you cant charge them while playing (when the Switch is docked).

They can, yes. They also have ridiculously good battery life. Something like 30 or 40 hours I think.

Yes, thanks for the info everyone. I will have to deliberate. I'm pretty okay financially at the moment, and I will be returning to work before long, so I can be a little free with a portion of my stimulus. I still hate to spend that much money and run into a problem, so I want to think it through.

Do not get a pro controller. It's way too expensive for the amount of issues it has.

If you want a good controller get an 8bitDo SN30+, the one that someone else posted above.

I just can't seem to pull the trigger and submit my order. I guess it's because the only game I really want to play is the Link's Awakening remake and everything else I'd ever play would be because "meh, already got a switch might as well."

I use that 8bitdo controller that others mentioned. It was dramatically cheaper than a pro and works great.

My only complaints are that it doesn't awaken the Switch. I have to walk my ass across the room and do it myself. Also, if you don't use it for a long while then you have to pair it with the Switch again. I always forget how and need to google it. Overall pretty minor tbh. As an actual controller it's great though.

The pro controller stick can get dirty after a while, but if you open up and clean it it'll work fine again.

But maybe that 8BitDo is a better solution. Don't have one of those.
