Is anyone playing this? I bought it when it was on sale the other day and at first I didn't like it much. But then I tried it again a couple days later when things had sunk in and now I kinda do like it.
Definitely baseline harder than Hades, and more focused on blocking/reacting to enemies. I wish it had more plot though, but that's probably just because Hades spoiled me.

I've been a little interested, especially since I hit the epilogue and beat Extreme Measures Hades in Hades.

How is the weapon/combat variety? It's looked kind of samey compared to the Hades weapons based on the streams I've watched, but I haven't seen a whole lot.

The weapon system helps a LOT with it. The combat is legit better than hades, and I dont say that lightly.

Hades is absolutely the exception to the lore rule lol

I think the variety is pretty good, so far. You're equipped with three kinds of weapons: Main, secondary, and two-handed. They all have some variety like ranged, light, heavy, medium. And then you mix and match. Passive abilities vary between weapons, so a shield might give you a 25% chance to automatically parry attacks, while throwing knives might instead reward you for making perfect dodges.

In the end variety is pretty good but as far as I've gotten, it's more about personal preference than in Hades. The weapons (especially their passive abilities) might slightly alter how you fight enemies, but it's more about just knowing when to dodge/parry, regardless of weapon. In Hades the various aspects will drastically change how you kill enemies. In this game it might be "oh I found this really strong two-handed weapon, that means I'll have to dodge less and parry more, since dodging takes stamina that I need for hitting". And you find new equipment constantly, kind of like Dead Cells, which can shake up your playstyle slightly during a run. But there's still a pretty distinct feel to each weapon, and they also vary in terms of knockback effects, how they move the character, etc which shakes things up.

I know lol, it's just that after Hades it feels a bit.. empty to have like no gameplay/content outside of the runs. I know this game has been around for a while, but I really wish Hades inspires more people to play around with roguelite elements and storytelling.

I highly doubt Hades will be the last one, but I also doubt any will do it quite as well.

I imagine it's the difficulty in making the "return to zero" gameplay style make sense in the narrative. Zagreus' insertion into the Greek mythology background was quite a clever and surprisingly not-contrived bit of storytelling.

True! I've been on the hunt for co-op roguelites to play with my gf, and have found some others that actually do an ok job. Children of Morta barely touches on the repetitive nature, it just tells a story as you progress through various biomes. Moonhunters has a really cool idea where you replay the same five days over and over and learn more about the world and characters. But the execution is pretty poor.

Bump

So far I've finished all the tier 2 stages. Didn't take me long after I finished the first boss, but that took a while. I'm still at a point where if I lose my rhythm a room will almost kill me before I get it back. Reached the final boss (fire dude) once and he absolutely destroyed me with a massive attack. At that point also I had five curses >_>

It'll be tricky because I can't reach him consistently yet, so I can't really learn his pattern well just yet
