Funny, cool, charismatic, sexy, they're all forms of enjoyment of characters regardless of what role they play. Personally, when characters get too evil I don't let how otherwise "likeable" they are influence me either but I get how stuff like that is how villains get memorable.

They're not "compromising with evil", they just think the character is physically attractive. It's not like they're saying, "Oh, when Loki drilled into that guy's eyeball in The Avengers, that was fucked up, but it's okay since he's hot" they're just saying, "I find that character's physical appearance hot."

And regardless, it's fiction, none of these things ever happened. They're not documentaries. They're just things made up by someone's mind.

FTR, on a personal level I actually do share your sentiment. I do get pretty annoyed when people excuse villains who've murdered innocent people because of how likeable they present themselves or have some sympathetic element.

Don't worry, the writers will do that themselves. Remember that example I used for Loki? A few movies later, and the story treats him as a good guy. Remember Vegeta killing countless innocents? A saga or two later, and the story treats him as a good guy.

Okay so this is pretty easy so far. Here's what I got

At its core, this is a notion that makes me uncomfortable. Rather than acknowledge and examine the discomfort, I deflect and push it off onto everyone else. Why avoid the discomfort? That's what I'll have to figure out next

I've had more submissive partners, and prefer submissive partners, as opposed to dominant ones. Dominance tends to actively turn me off, 9 out of 10 times. How on earth can I reconcile this preference with lashing out at people on the internet for actively fulfilling that preference? I guess this circles back to the discomfort thing

Now, why would it make me uncomfortable to see open expressions of submission outside of a bedroom/relationship? Is it because I can't get in that frame of mind? Unfamiliar = bad, according to my primitive brain?

Maybe this reminds me, that in the right context, I like when people act this way. If that's true, then my brain most definitely recognizes that. So on some level, I think it reminds me that I have sexual desires (see even though i've made great strides that kinda makes me uncomfortable to type). From there, I'd hazard that the leap my subconscious makes is

• lots of people open about this facet of sex (or attraction, even)
• this = a bombardment of reminders that sex exists and i like that it specifically exists in this form/preference/whatever
• brain then goes "oh so you like people like that? but you know sex is bad and shouldnt be talked about openly, right? have fun feeling guilty now"

I think a big part of it also is where I get exposed to stuff like the image in the OP. Here, there are tons of threads where people pic dump porn-lite. I even go in some of them now (that took a lot of effort i'm sad to say, lol). So I expect to see stuff like that here. I don't expect to see reminders of sex, human attraction, or fetishes in general when I'm browsing reddit since I've blacklisted any porn/kink/sex sub that hits r/all. So some part of my visceral reaction is misplaced anger because my expectations and reality aren't aligning

the meme resonates because people know intrinsically that villains can be attractive because they drive the action and don't play by all the rules. in real life, most people don't reward sociopathic behavior, but on a smaller level, it can be attractive in doses. I'm not telling you anything you don't know, it's that you're having such a strong reaction that shows there's something you haven't reconciled about this.

I have taken many steps forward but sometimes it feels like I take a a couple steps back. Overall I'm further ahead than I was though, so small victories I suppose.

I've uncovered another layer - envy of people who can be sexually open without feeling bad. Expressed outwardly as annoyance, broadcasted in the general direction of anyone around. Definitely something I feel like is completely out of reach for me, forever. Of course there's an element of that in the reddit thread for the pic in the OP

So, what to do about that? Ideally I would peel the layers back, identify the cause of this envy, or this discomfort from being open that way myself, and uproot it. Stop being wound up by my own baggage, which is happening with increasing frequency. That might not be possible, so I also have to learn to be comfortable with people expressing themselves openly. I have to realize it's not an attempt to make anyone feel uncomfortable or envious; 99% it's just basic conversation

Now, how to unload all this baggage. I'm all article'd out atm, so maybe later tonight. Still gotta read about that Shadow concept. Wanna read more about Fear of Engulfment as well, that kind of touches on my topic from the other day about how the prospect of any kind of conventional or unconventional relationship makes me uncomfortable
