My main selling points are high difficulty, interesting battle system, decent amount of non-linearity/freedom in exploration. Any fans have advice? Am I correct that it's fine to jump in at any point in this series (unlike the Trails franchise)?

Also if anyone wants to explain how to pronounce Ys that would be appreciated too

Start with Origins. It covers the basics of the games while being very light on story. Skip 1 & 2. Play the rest however you like. 1 & 2 are very old and did not age well. The remakes while graphically impressive intentionally kept all the wonky archaic shit.

Don't listen to this guy, 1 & 2 have both been remade multiple times so they are modern enough to be playable. Also he thinks Xenogears is a bad game so you can't trust his gaming opinions.

8 has two and three but the difficulty is honestly pretty brainless
Original sidescroller Ys 3 isn't exactly easy.

The bump combat system works rather well and is pretty fun, so ignore this person saying they are bad games.

When I played the first two games and Ark of Naphistim I remember hitting the occasional wall where even with the best gear available I could just barely not beat certain bosses, but as soon as I grinded just one level up that same boss would go down like a chump. So being prepared for the occasional grind is something I'd consider a pre-requisite for getting into this series.

All of those old RPGs used grinding to pad out their length. The grinding isn't especially worse in Ys as it is in other games released around the same time like FF2 and Phantasy Star

Celcetta, 8 and 9 when it comes to pc if it isn't there already if you want party members and more story

Oath in Felghana and Origin if you want top down 1 character and less story

It's eees (like ease)

Are the newer games better about this at least? Or do they have good enough gameplay that grinding can be fun? I don't actually dislike the games I've played, it just feels annoying whenever I do hit that wall.

Any of the modern games past 2 and you're golden. Maybe not 6, haven't played it yet

But the older top down games (Oath in Felghana and Origin) may require a small bit of grinding but the gameplay is so fast it's no biggie

Seven, Memories in Celceta, 8 and 9 require no grinding
