We have a mutually beneficial trade relationship and the Saudis have for the most part supported our foriegn policy decisions post WWII, particularly against the Soviets. Still, to say it's a shakey relationship is an understatement. Considering they're among our most important allies in the world, we gain a lot more from a good relationship with them than a good one with Iran would. This is fundamentally the answer; if they could, Iran would have wiped Israel off the map long ago because of religious and cultural differences. The US is happy to support a straight up absolute monarchy/theocracy hybrid like Saudi Arabia because they go along with US foreign policy wishes.
