The 400 meter long, 200,000 ton container ship Ever Given lost power yesterday while traversing the Suez Canal and ended up wedged sideways with the bow aground, blocking all traffic and nearly causing several other ships to collide as they had to make emergency stops.

The Suez Canal is the main shipping artery between Asia and Europe, allowing ships to travel from the Red Sea into the Mediterranean in a matter of hours instead of taking days to sail around Africa. This blockage is costing shipping companies millions of dollars per hour.

Evergreen Marine is the name of the shipping company. Most of their ships are named "Ever something". The Ever Given is in the Ever Golden-class, and some of her sister ships include the Ever Genius, Ever Gifted, Ever Goods, and Ever Greet.

Doesn't seem that weird to me? Holding pattern until their turn comes up so they go they didn't have a good angle on their first attempt and had to make a big circle to get in.

Safe to say the rescue crews are on an EverQuest.

The Maersk Denver is running in reverse, backing out of the canal, a tricky maneuver and not something you see every day. This was the ship that was immediately behind the Ever Given, which is still stuck across the canal.

That's terrible negotiation strategy. You don't ask for the raise after the urgent, high-profile job they need you for is done. You ask for it before you start working, when they stand to lose your entire annual salary each minute you delay in starting. On a serious note, I'm pretty amazed that whoever runs and maintains one of the most important canals on the planet doesn't have a contingency plan in the chamber that goes beyond, "we know this dude with a backhoe".

its almost as if there were boats designed to tug a grounded vessel into deeper waters. or position them in the event of an accident or mechanical problem, like a water-born tow truck. surely a boat has been designed to solve this dilemma no sea going vessel has ever obviously suffered in the history of seafaring.
