Only people who have been broke or uneducated their whole lives would be insulted by them.

Hell no. A Pre-Nup broke up Barney and Quinn. Barney Stinson saw the Pre-Nup as enough of a reason to not marry a stripper.

I thought they stand up well regarding assets you had before marriage? It's assets you gain after marriage that are at risk?

Here's a small write up of why they don't stand up sometimes.

Assets you had before marriage are typically off the table. My lawyer laughed her ass off when my ex wife wanted half my comic collection which was about $60k

Are prenups still the smart thing to do if the definition of marriage changes to "partner you split your assets with"?

Most regular folks dont need them. Assets before marriage are typically not split (though this depends on the state, I believe most are like this though). Unless one of you owns a business or has children or other unique situation, then I dont see any need for them.

Where I live they are more or less completely toothless.

My parents had me and my siblings all get them before we got married to protect family property.

I believe this varies state by state. edit: LMAO I didn't even process that you said that in your post. :p

Pre nups used to be worth their weight in gold but the laws have made sure to make it very likely a judge throws it out or does not care. Lots of men have had their pre nups tossed out and had the worst financial fucking of their lives.

If your gay or lesbian they are still good but if your a straight man they are as worthless as toilet paper.

Haha yeah. Definitely look up state laws before getting married so you know what youre getting into and if you need additional protection. California for example is a community property state so only things acquired during the marriage are split, which is fair to me. Both my husband and I came in with very little assets and everything weve grown since then has been together. So no need for any prenup for us. Though I hear the alimony laws are a real bitch. Especially if married over 10 years. And prenups are a toss up on whether or not they can protect you.

And yeah protecting family property is a great reason to get one.

Your average CEman though likely doesnt need one.

Not getting married and letting your relationship stand on its own merits is the smart thing to do. My girlfriend and I have no marriage plans unless we can find a REALLY compelling reason to do so.

This is the way to go. There are plenty of great girls out there. Unfortunately many broke gold-diggers as well who think men are too cheap to get married.
