Most Tantanmen noodles use Tonkutsu broth (which is very yummy), and the dish itself is spicy as chili oil is used in the soup base and as a topping. My wife got some tantanmen at a Chinese place here this weekend as well (ramen is actually a Chinese food, lamian, that has been heavily adapted to Japanese tastes). Both were spicy, but nothing like you can get at an Indian or Thai place. Oh, just to add for context.
