An "eternal soul" would violate the laws of thermodynamics.

That's because a soul would not follow the traditional rules of physics. The nature of life is that motion dictates the cycle of existence, everything that moves has a beginning and will have an ending. Matter is never created or destroyed, it only changes form. However, the concept of eternity does not apply to anything that hasn't been set into motion within a three dimensional point of spacetime. If a soul is immortal, it cannot be a physical object in motion, as it cannot physically occupy a point in time and space. Thus, eternity is essentially the culmination of the combined experience of being at all points of space and time linked together at once.

i love science but that's just a bad argument to make, and that is what I was responding to.

the point in trying to understand what happens after death or what the meaning of reality is, if there is any, is because people are curious creatures and because people also love one another and want to know if they'll see each other again. etc. no matter what, people will voluntarily engage in these types of questions and discussions as they get to know each other and find out they care about each other.

it's also genuinely exciting to think we may not be alone in the universe and that life on earth was engineered rather than just arbitrary.

Of course we know how the soul works. It's your metaphysical self, the part of you that exists together with the rest of the quantum realm beyond sound and light. The mind is the gateway between the physical body and the soul.

The same way you drive a car and use your mind to make decisions on where to go and what to do, your soul drives your body and you use your mind to choose how to express your life through thoughts and your 5 physical senses.

Philosophy and religion are things people make up to find comfort in their ignorance. People can't just accept that we don't know everything. No science, no facts, no logic at this time? philosophy and religions are frameworks that have legitimate utility and practical applications. I'm of the view that Marx would have been a follower of Christ for example, and that he probably derived his economic model from studying what the first church did. (That'd be why MLK was a Christian and a socialist)
