I mostly remember those Fear Street books being kind of fucked up. There was even one miniseries about a particular house on that street where a really young kid and his dog gets trapped inside the walls of the house. Despite his parents ripping open walls anywhere they can hear him and the dog begging for help, they never find him. Until the second book where the new family is trying to remodel and find the kid and the dog's skeletal remains.

I heard a rumor that R.L. Stine legitimately does not know how to type. Meaning that he uses his index fingers to peck at the keys as he writes his novels

Can anyone confirm?

In his autobiography he wrote that when he found a typewriter in his attack he developed a habit of using one finger to type and it stuck.

Today his typing finger is fucked up.

I don't think Stein's poor by any stretch of the imagination. His wife cofounded a publishing company.

Goosebumps 2000s is what I grew up on. Would order them all the time off Scholastic. With the original books I had a couple here and there, a lot in the library that I would read, and some from friends at the time.

the CYOAs had a lot of fucked up bad endings. fear street was aimed at a slighty older audience so im guessing he ramped it up a notch.

It's the other way around.

Fear Street came first and his bosses wanted him to do a series for a younger audience so he created Goosebumps. Some of the early entries (especially the first book) are a lot darker in tone than the rest of the series.

Those were fantastic. There was a whole soap opera's worth of lore and generational spookiness.

I loved this series. The CYOA books were okay. Don't quite remember the special editions.

I do remember when the regular books over time shifted genres from horror to fantasy/adventure. They weren't bad books, just different. Like I don't think there was a single scary moment in How I Learned to Fly.

I actually just picked up Monster Blood the other day for a series reread. I got nostalgic and will try to finish this time along with Animorphs.

I'm a little surprised that Animorphs feels like a quicker read than Goosebumps, despite being longer and having much more serious moments. Goosebumps gets more descriptive, which I guess is necessary to set the mood for a horror book.

@ModLogic What do you mean by special editions? The short story collections?

TIL that all of the main series was written by R. L. Stine. I always thought that most of them were ghostwritten. Apparently there was some dispute because he hired people to help outline books, but he did all of the writing.
