It seems completely nuts to me that something can be be required by law and at the same time be a total fucking cowboy sham of an industry.

If I don't have insurance I am legally not allowed to drive my car on the road, but

  • Insurers can "sell" me on a package instead of just honestly declare the best one for my circumstances
  • They can set an automatic renewal policy and arbitrarily raise the price of it every year unless I proactively seek another provider
  • If I try to cancel they will run me through the most needlessly convoluted phone system and sales guy pitch where I'm basically being pressured to stay out of sheer exhaustion
  • Every goddamn instance of customer service is automated except ^^^ that one. Totally malicious design
  • They charge an administration fee for cancelling even though it could literally be a fucking button on the app
  • If an accident every actually happens they will exhaust every fibre of their being to not pay out the terms of the policy on the most out-field of technicalities. We're sorry you got T-boned at the intersection sir, but looking at your odometer you're actually over your expected mileage by 400 miles for the year...
  • The actual calculations of what I need to pay exist in some weird labyrinthian algorithm where the difference between being an IT engineer and an IT consultant somehow greatly affects the amount of money this all costs
  • The actual instances of needing insurance almost never pay dividends. Good luck getting sally to give you her details when she backs into your door!
  • Oh you did get her details this time? Well the repair would cost you $600, but your excess is only $500! Also we'll have to raise your premium for next year. What a savings!

Fuck I just get pure steaming when I mind it. This close to joining la revolucion every time that direct debit comes out of my account
