calls it a flop. It won 2 academy awards and it has grossed $372 million according to Wikipedia. Did New Line lose money?

New Line did the final edit without the author's approval so I am guessing it needs a director's cut.

Those are thin margins for a high budget anticipated blockbuster. I wouldn't be surprised if the marketing budget matched the production budget

If they were hoping the movie would turn into a massive franchise like LOTR or even a moderate franchise like Narnia then the movie doing "only okay" could still be considered a failure for them.

So the company lost its independence so ... They should have launched it in Europe to begin with.
