Humans have existed for about 200,000 years.
During that time, until the most recent period, our population never exceeded 15 million across the whole planet, and was usually around only 1 million.

For the first 100,000 of those years, we stayed in Africa.

It was about 125,000 years ago we started to harness fire.

It was ~15,000 years ago we domesticated wolves, and then 11,000 years ago that we domesticated goats, pigs, and sheep, then horses, etc.

It was about 14,000 years ago that humans started settling and developing rather than just wandering around aimlessly.

It was only ~5000 years ago we started writing.

We only discovered wheels ~4000 years ago, which could be used to move people and things around quickly.

Basically we spent a long time bumbling around, and we only really started developing/advancing very recently.

Honestly, starting from literal scratch, that ain't bad. I mean, we have no other direct comparisons but they did what we could with what they had! If any sort of religion or spiritualism is worth a second thought, it's ancestor worship. I have so much respect for the humans who came before us, who suffered so much. I can only imagine how terrifying existence must have been in those many early years of mankind.

They lived in a very interesting but very mysterious and scary world

Everything outside the home camp was the land of monsters and spirits.

Roughly the last century alone has completely changed the world too. It's pretty incredible how much old technologies accelerate the rate of development of new technologies and create a massive positive feedback loop.
