No, I don't blame China for Donald Trump deliberately downplaying the dangers of COVID while simultaneously resisting any and all attempts to avoid the spread and needlessly turning it into a partisan issue.
Holy fuck.

I blame them in the sense that they tried to contain the spread of information about the virus.

Do I think it's a man made virus? No.
This, the chinese government pretty much prioritized their image rather than limiting the spread of the virus or at least warning other countries.
This doesn't mean other countries are absolved tho, the US' trash-tier handling also had a big impact in the situation worsening

Eastern countries around China that had tons of Chinese tourists like Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, etc. Managed to control the spread very well, many without having any of kind of lockdowns. They did it by ignoring the WHO and the west and using masks, travel restrictions, etc. Because they had experience with these things before. People in the West were literally mocking East Asians for wearing masks and doing travel restrictions, both left and right, because the WHO said they weren't needed and the CDC also said masks weren't needed. Then when the US finally started doing half-assed travel restrictions it was too late and they didn't start acknowledging masks worked until they were leading the world in infections.

The Chinese government was never going to release all the information or do anything that would make them look bad. No one in East Asia expected them too, and they had been through this before with SARS etc. Their governments responded appropriately and if you ignore the rhetoric coming out of the Chinese government and instead look at what they did you will see they also responded strongly once it became apparent it was a threat (believe me, I was in Wuhan from January until my evacuation in mid-February).

No one in Japan is worried about blaming China or whatever. Never had anyone say anything bad to my wife or her parents (we live in Japan together) despite them obviously being Chinese. At some point the blame game isn't helpful if your own government doesn't want to own up to the fact that the reason this virus was so devastating is because of a culture of ignorance and arrogance facilitated by a government reflecting that culture.

One thing I absolutely do blame them for is the sketchy wet market shit (again, this is assuming thats where / how the virus really originated).

Thats the part that bothers me the most about this whole thing and it really feels like not enough people are also concerned about it.

And why the fuck were sketchy-ass places like that allowed to reopen? Every single one of those should have been shut down immediately and never allowed to reopen. People storing food improperly and eating it literally caused a global pandemic. (Again, assuming thats really how it happened).

F***

Rules and regulations for business, food, etc. in China are poorly or not enforced at all in general. You see people selling stuff illegally everywhere. I saw these people pack up their entire shop and hide in a bathroom right when I was about to buy some goods from them. I was super confused and then a moment later a cop walked by. It's a wild place. The food tastes good and is super cheap, so I find it best not to think about it too much.

Somewhat ironically America fucked up the response for much of the same reason as China. We had leadership that was more concerned with public image & perception than the truth.

Holy fuck.
Trump's position on COVID was that it wasn't a big deal, no worse than the flu, people were stupid for taking even the most basic precautions, and completely China's fault.
