And I loved it. Now that I'm older I'm finding I'm liking dialogue heavy movies more

The ending though - I already knew how it ended going into it but what did Taylor mean when he said "you blew it up" specifically?

I always assumed he meant literally the statue and figuratively the US government (and by extension democracy).

The original story/book took place in France, though.

ETA: also its a classic Cold War-era warning about nuclear weapons.

perhaps he thought that humanity had destroyed their own civilization which then allowed apes to rule over them.
this gets fleshed out in the sequels.

iirc, in the last movie (of the original) it's explained that despite apes beginning to revolt against their human masters there was some war between humans which destroyed a lot of their cities.

but it's been many years and I forget exactly
