A laptop "RTX 3080" isn't a real 3080.

You could just get a pre-built with a 3080 for like 1800-2000. Probably would have to wait 2 months for it to ship though.

The 150W model has performance approximately on par with a desktop 3070.

This. My understanding is it'd basically be a 3070 with extra VRAM. Which is still gonna be pretty fucking lit.

What's really stupid is that the laptop 3080 has more VRAM than the desktop 3080. 16 GB vs. 10 GB smh.

Does it do anything with the extra RAM to try and bridge the performance gap, or is it literally just "haha you can have high power or you can have high VRAM but muahaha you can't have both!"

I just got a MSI Gp65 gaming laptop and I fucking love it.

i7 with a 2070. 16GB of ram and 1.5TB of storage (one SDD and one regular) $1299

And I have one of those steelseries color LED keyboards.

I was going to upgrade my desktop PC but decided it wasn't worth it.

The fact is that the RTX 3080 only having 10 GB of VRAM but being a 4K GPU is kind of a problem going down the line, and NVIDIA knows it.

Would the 3080 still be relevant by the time 10GB isn't enough for 4K? I could certianly see it being insufficient for 8K, but I mean, I haven't even run into trouble (so far) on a 3GB GTX 1060 or a 4GB GTX 960M... admittedly I don't play many AAA titles, but still.

its tied into how the memory is handled. the desktop version has a higher bus bit width (320 vs 256), which forced nvidia to either go with 8GB or 16GB on the laptop GPU. they went with 16 because bigger number looks better to consumer obviously, but they also did it to make sure that memory wont be the bottleneck in the card. that'll likely be heat or possibly data transfer rate because of the narrower bus.
