I compost everything i can into my garden.

i take egg shells, onion skins, potato peelings, coffee grounds, and other kitchen scraps and i either bury it directly in the soil, or i put it in my compost bin. i mix in some dry leaves or grass clippings and let that sit for a month or so. worms get in there and help the process, breaking down the food and other organic materials into compounds my plants can use. then i use them in my pots or i mix them into my raised beds.

also, any plants im done with, i dont get rid of them by putting them in the yard waste bin. i either cut them up by hand or run them over with my lawn mover. then i use them as mulch or put them in my compost bin as well. they break down and turn to compost and give back to the garden.

so my garden never loses nutrients, only gains. well i guess it loses things if i eat things but i think i add more than i lose.

mostly my compost is lawn clippings, my yard is full of bermuda grass which requires weekly cutting and produces a fuck ton of grass clippings. i also toss in dead plants, bad harvested vegetables, food scraps, leaf litter, newspaper, and on occasion cardboard boxes. its let me fill two raised gardens over two years at zero cost.

managing a compost pile is piss easy for the most part, you do need to set aside a few hours every month or two to turn it over though.

This is the only thing I haven't done. I wanted to shred up all the junk mail I get, but I ended up just breaking my cheap paper shredder lol

i just rip it into shreds by hand, works well enough. only use non-glossy paper though, dont want to add plastic to the pile.

oh, another thing i've been adding for years is used charcoal from my grill. its supposed to act as like a water and nutrient sponge.
