Which side do you support?

The Biden administration is quietly ramping up its financial assistance to Palestinians, in the latest reversal of former President Donald Trumps foreign policy.

The State Department, along with the US Agency for International Development, notified Congress of their intent to deliver nearly $75 million in aid to the region just one day after announcing a $15 million commitment publicly to vulnerable Palestinian groups.

The State Department declined to say whether the $15 million was included in the $75 million mentioned to Congress, or if the two were separate payments.

The funds do not require further Congressional approval, as they were largely appropriated in the 2020 fiscal year budget.

They werent spent prior to President Biden taking office, however, because of the Trump administration policy blocking nearly all aid to Palestinians.

Then-President Trump severed ties with the Palestinian Authority in August 2018, amid heightened tensions over the then-commander-in-chiefs decision to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The decision to block aid resulted in the Palestinians losing out on over $200 million.

The Biden administration did not go out of its way to publicize the payment renewals, likely an effort to not cause concern among pro-Israel Americans over his Middle East positions.

Reached for comment, State Department spokesman Ned Price reiterated the Biden administrations support for resuming aid to the Palestinians.

"We continue to believe that American support for the Palestinian people, including financial support, it is consistent with our values. It is consistent with our interests. Of course, it is consistent with the interests of the Palestinian people," Price told reporters.

"Its also consistent with the interests of our partner, Israel, and well have more to say on that going forward," he continued.

While Biden may not support the Trump doctrine on all aspects of foreign policy, he has welcomed one effort by the previous president: the Abraham Accords.

The Abraham Accords were signed in September of last year, normalizing relations between Israel and two Gulf countries in a deal spearheaded by the Trump administration.

Biden pledged at the time to build on the work of his predecessor, praising the diplomatic achievements that brought together Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Israel.

I like that the right wing is simutaniously calling Biden radical and at the same complaining that all he is doing is reversing Trump introduced policies lol.

Israel's treatment of Palestinians is wrong, but they are still the most progressive country in the Middle East by far.

They are a model for other religious countries to follow.

A lot of the Muslim countries follow ultraconservative versions of Islam (Salafism or Wahhabism), and in Iran's case while they are a different branch of Islam they are also ultraconservative and a literal theocracy.

They do some things right but their failed current election shows they still have a long way to go.

I am pro-isreal in that I support their existence. And yeah even as bad as their government is right now it's still better then most Islamic countries.

Right now they basically have the equivalent of pre-Trump Republicans with control of their country.

The US should work toward brokering more diplomatic deals between Israel and other middle eastern countries. A lot of Israelis probably have a fear for the safety of their country, so they vote for Netanyahu's party.

It's always struck me as odd that people can have such hardline stances on territorial battles in the middle east that have been going on for centuries, like it's obvious what the right thing to do is.

This Is such a bad post

1. While conflict maybe old, a lot of the current issues complicating are modern
2. Even if they weren't, "Its weird you care about this and have a stance in it! Because obviously its fucked!" (which btw is a stance on it, just a lazy one) is dumb as shit

Voter suppression is as old as elections, that doesn't mean it's weird to have views on the Republican voter disenfranchisement in Georgia

Racism is as old as time, that doesn't mean its okay to claim it's not settled

Just seems to be making a case for not wanting to learn or think about things

Much more ignorant is the thought that any amount of reading of the many histories of the Israel Palestine conflict would lead anyone to a clear moral stance of "pro-Israel" or "pro-Palestine".

You don't need a hard-line pro-Israel or pro-Palestine stance to know that Israelis stealing Palestinian land is wrong. You don't need to solve a century old feud to provide immediate aid to people who are hurting.

Who the fuck knows. Either way, shit's fucked.
That's what you said. I'm not trying to mince your words. There are current specific issues within Palestine that can be alleviated by providing aid. We can argue about how much, or to where that aid should go, or the long-term consequences of that aid; but that's not what you said. Your post ignored the reality of the situation just to add nothing to the discussion.

Israelis encroaching into defined Palestinian land, claiming occupancy, and then claiming it as ethnically Israeli. That is stealing land, doesn't matter how Israel views it. If a bunch of Canadians hopped the border, set up literal camps, and claimed Canadian sovereignty no one would let it fly.
