In that it was a "surprise" ending.

It was fucking great IMO

Even though I'd have read several more volumes about the state of the world after the 30 year time jump or whatever

As someone who has only played the first season of the walking dead video game, and that's ALL the content of TWD I've ever watched, what was the ending? lol

Okay I feel really bad for not specifying, but I'm talking about the comics and not the show.

I haven't watched the show in years.

There are a number of characters in the show dead that are very much alive in the comic up to the ending I hear.

Comic spoilers

They find a large alliance of communities in the midwest called The Commonwealth, but shortly after finding them, Rick is killed by someone who thinks he's there to take power in a coup. The last issues flip to Carl's POV and the final issue of the series is an epilogue set 30 years later where society has "moved on" from the apocalypse ie: they have limited electricity, infrastructure, a system of government, and there's a reference to Carl having not seen a Walker in years.

You did specify it in the title

Just looked it up

Why does it blow your mind that people were mad about it?
Specifically the fact that people seemed mad that

A) That's how it ended

and

B) That it was kept a secret before the final issue released. No indication was given that the series was ending beforehand.

I thought he ending itself was brilliant (I loved that Carl kept leaving things out for Negan) and I have absolutely no problems with them doing the time skip for an "epilogue" style ending.

What bothered me a bit was that they seemed to skip over some really key stuff to get there. I'm not talking about the events in the years between the last two issues - you have to accept that lots of events get lost in time skips, I'm talking about the stuff that would have happened immediately after the penultimate issue - Rick's body being brought back to Alexandria, the communities learning of his death, the reactions and so on.

That deserved it's own six-issue volume - and it would have been the most interesting one in years - and I don't believe for a second they didn't initially plan on including it. And I don't even think that it needed any more than that, it actually would have made narrative sense to jump to the distant epilogue after that volume. I'm sure that they only cut to the end issue when they did because otherwise it would have fucked with their "two volumes per hardback, eight volumes per compendium" business model to have an odd number of volumes, which did make it feel a bit more jarring than it needed to.

But, yeah, the actual final issue was fantastic - one of the best individual issues of the whole comic.
