I closed on the house on 3/26. I went to USPS to submit a request for a mailbox key. In this neighborhood, there is a cluster mailbox. I have no idea which one is mine, but I'm supposed to find out when I get the key.

3/27: Request submitted. "It will take 5 business days and they'll call you when your key is ready."

No phone call yet. I went to USPS again just now and it turns out they haven't even submitted the request I put in yet. But now I'm supposed to have confidence that they're going to call me this week. They can't tell me when the call is coming or when they're actually going to submit the request.

If I miss deadlines for my house because of this, I'm gonna be pissed.

Yeah, that's a pretty justifiable reason to be pissed off. Same thing happened to my friend right at the start of the pandemic and they wound up missing deadlines as a result. Hoping you wind up with better luck.

Your first mistake was expecting any simblance of quality or integrity from the USPS. There's the bare minimum and then well below that you'll find the USPS.

I pretty much figured there would be a delay, which is why I went to check on the status this morning. I'm probably just going to keep going every morning until they can actually give me an update.

Cant they like fax the documents to your work or something instead of having to rely on the mailbox?

I left a voicemail with my lender to ask about:
  • Do I need to do anything now?
  • If so, can they email me the information?

Damn where do you guys live that USPS sucks so much? Any time I have to go to mine they're super helpful. I think I've only ever gotten one thing late whereas every other package seems to be early.

I live in San Antonio, TX. This is one of the areas where they removed a bunch of mail sorting machines and apparently they don't have enough staff to keep up with the workload appropriately.

Charlotte, NC. They like to lose packages and deliver them to the wrong address and take 0 accountability when something is their fault.

I remember submitting a DNA Test kit to USPS just to be 100% sure my child is actually mine. I think something like a DNA test kit is a bit time sensitive or the solutions might start breaking down. I dropped it off in the drop box on a Saturday maybe 30 mins after the scheduled pick up time (drop box is literally right in front of the post office) since I didn't realize they closed so early. It sat at that post office until fucking Friday before they moved it. 6 damn days of no movement and just sitting there.

So USPS had me put in a request to have my mail held until the key arrives. I asked about my mail that has come in before this hold request.

USPS: That mail has been delivered.
Me: OK. Delivered where and to which mailbox, and how do I get it?
USPS: We don't know, but it would have been delivered.
Me: I get that it would have been delivered. There is a cluster mailbox in my neighborhood and I don't know which one is mine or how I would access it if I did know.
USPS: You won't be able to access it until you get the key.
Me: Right, so when am I getting the key?
USPS: It'll be within 5 business days from when the request is submitted.
Me: I submitted the request on the 27th. It has been 5 business days.
USPS: We have your request, but we haven't submitted it into our system.
Me: When is that going to happen?

Just went back to the post office to see if they could actually submit the request today or if I could take the request to another post office to get it submitted

Turns out the keys have been there all day and no one called

Unreal

Immediately open a PO box and use it as your mailing address if you have to get physical mail.

What's the benefit there?

I've never had a PO box before.

but at least you got your keys finally?
Yeah... Bizarre experience here. Not sure how they went from "We never submitted your request" to "Oh hey, your keys were right here" in the span of 8 hours or so.

One your mail travels a bit less since they're located at the post office.

Two it gives you a centralized spot for your mail, and helps prevent not getting mail because of something like the issue you were having.

I'm surprised they even said it was a 5 business day wait. When I got the mail key for my last apartment (also a big cluster-box thing) I just had to fill out a form and they handed me the key immediately.
