Its almost as if Israel is deliberately trying to be as shitty as possibly over the last 20 years. I mean, this is the same country that performed Operation Solomon.

Its like they heard people say theyre an apartheid state and they decided to run with it.

Yitzhak Rabin would be spinning in his grave.

So Israel has become a super racist hateful country.... Well, that is incredibly ironic. My family raised me Jewish, but I never liked that country from all the horrible things I heard, they pretty much had me labeled as a self hating Jew for a while.

the country was founded by high minded european leaders looking to "solve the jewish problem" by creating an ethnostate smack dab in the center of a region contaminated by a couple thousand years of religious ideology and warfare, they did this by supplanting people with hundreds of years of claim to the land...

israel has been a racist state from the beginning. funniest thing about it is that every practicing jewish person i know has no urge to associate with it, the only people i know that actually care about it are born again christians.

To be fair to them, living in other peoples lands has historically not worked too well, so its understandable some of them wanted their own country. Of course, the fact that Israel had not existed as an independent polity in ~2,000 years, Jews had not been a majority there for over 1,500, and lots of people lived there maybe should have counted for a lot more than it did/does.

In any case, Ive read a few books about Versailles, so I can shed a little light on the matter:
1) The British foreign service was convinced by anti-Communist propaganda that the Russian Revolution was a Jewish plot, and believed they could sway German and Austro-Hungarian Jews by showing beneficence to the Zionists. That this was completely baseless, insane, and ironically anti-Semitic was lost on them. The Balfour Declaration was also an attempt to maneuver themselves into being de facto overlords of Palestine, because they wanted it but the French had called dibs.

2) The British military, on the other hand, was just old school anti-Semitic and hated the Zionists. They intentionally and deliberately empowered the most virulently anti-Semitic figures in the local Muslim community(right down to overruling the local religious establishment to appoint an anti-Semite to head the local religious establishment).

3) The Zionists actually got along well with Prince Faisal bin Hussein, the leader of Britains Arab auxiliaries and their favored leader of a united Arabic state(under British influence, of course!) He was amenable to their interests and willing to work with them, but the French managed to stake their claim to Syria at Versailles and chased Faisal off when the Syrian parliament crowned him Sultan, and took a more direct role in governing Syria. This deprived the Arabs of a charismatic and vigorous local leader who had the trust of both the locals and leading Zionists. He may have been able to mediate the issue.
The British, for their part, carted Faisal off to Iraq and crowned him Sultan after basically black-bagging a popular local candidate and exiling him to Malta.

I've read three, and I can recommend them all.

  • A Shattered Peace: Versailles 1919 and the Price We Pay Today by David A. Andelman
Basically an overview of all the interests that were present at or adjacent to Versailles, and how Versailles mostly left everyone angry and disappointed. Each chapter is about a different group (the Zionists, the Arabs, European and Colonial nationalists, etc.) and spells out how they were involved in proceedings, what their goals were, and how they got screwed(mostly).

  • A Peace To End All Peace: The Fall of the Ottoman Empire and the Creation of the Modern Middle East by David Fromkin
This is more focused: it examines both the interests of the Turks and the British as well as the Arabs caught between them, recounts the war in the Middle East, and the political manuevering within the alliances both during and after the war. Basically, you get to find out how goddamned insane Britain's post-war ambitions were they were so insane that noted British Imperialist Winston Churchill thought they were insane!

  • The Vanquished: Why The First World War Failed To End by Robert Gerwarth
This is mostly focused on the defeated powers(whether they were defeated upon the battlefield or at a peace conference or both) and their experience of the immediate aftermath(basically 1917-25 or so). Whether it's proto-Nazi German Freikorps roaming the former German occupation zone in the East, communist revolutions, frustrated ambitions, ethnic cleansing, or defeat in the field, he tells you all about how they got screwed and how they felt about it.

As far as something about the pre-WW1 era, The Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went to War in 1914 by Christopher Clark is absolutely brilliant.

Edit: OMG LOL that censor. Good job Game FAQs, you caught me!
