I assume it was because the Roper's were old fashioned and it's not right for a guy to live with two girls and not be married or related. I believe the girls were in financial trouble and a new roommate to split rent with was very helpful. Also he was kind of being a dick about it, but Mr. Roper was actually pretty progressive. He liked Jack as a person despite all of his teasing.

Sanford and Son was a basic premise. They owned a dump and happened to live on it and it was just the adventures of a father and son. You didnt really have to stretch much to make it believable.

Mrs. Roper actually figured out that Jack wasn't gay by the second episode, but kept it from her husband. Though when Mr. Furley came they also had to pretend that Jack was gay. Though I don't think he would have a problem with it as it was his brother that owned the building and in one episode he attempts to make Jack go "straight" and when he thinks he was successful he tells Jack he would have to move out because his brother would never allow a straight man to live with two women. --- It's amazing how people hang around message boards of games they don't like ...
