As in, you don't know what to expect the music to sound like. I know it encompasses popularity/origin. But it tells you nothing about what the sound is like, right?

Yeah, it's an umbrella term that has kinda just evolved to encompass modern rock that does not fit neatly into other categories.

I'm not a music guy at all, but isn't almost all rock these days "alternative" in the sense that it's not really mainstream? Rock just isn't the dominant genre that needs that distinction anymore.

Yeah the common definition of alternative is basically any non-metal rock-based music from after the grunge era. It's a really awful term.

Alt is anything that doesn't yet have a name. When it gets a name it stops being alt and something new becomes alt
