I miss it. My family used to go to a local Greek family's restaurant and they made St. Louis style pizza that was quite good. Smoky and savory cheese on thin crust with ingredients that really stuck in the cheese. You just had to make sure the cheese stayed in place.

I've tried a deep dish every time I went to Chicago. (Well, Skokie)...

First I tried Lou Malnati's. It was okay.
Second, I tried Pequod's. They fucked my order up and wouldn't fix it.
Third, I forget where but I know I wasn't happy with this one either.
Last, which was just this past week, I tried La Rosa's, and I actually really liked theirs.

Makes for shitty leftovers, but day of, it's pretty tight.

lol, La Rosa was one of my absolute favorites growing up. Truly a delicious Chicago thin crust. Very greasy so as I've gotten older I've had to watch it for the heartburn, but I put a large La Rosa thin crust away many a Friday night as a teenager.

When someone from Cincinnati talked about LaRosa's, I thought it was the same thing and that my hometown favorite was actually an Ohio chain. Nope. The La Rosa in Skokie is a local joint while LaRosa's Pizzeria is a chain in Ohio that apparently has locations in Indiana and Kentucky.

Lou Malnati's was not my favorite growing up. It's more of a deep dish than stuffed and as I grew older I recognized that it is top tier. Get the sausage for best results.

Giordano's is the best I've had in Chicago for stuffed. They've expanded to other cities but I had one in Las Vegas that wasn't as good.

Yeah, it was funny. I ordered a stuffed crust or something, and it never said it was a deep dish pizza. I kinda gave up at that point on deep dish and just was like "Eh, let's see what happens with a standard type" and when it came, I didn't expect it was gonna actually be a deep dish.

Crazy. Yeah, this Skokie one was worth it for sure. We said next time we come back to Skokie, that'd be the place we order from.

Eh, I don't eat sausage, so I'd have to pass. My friend from Aurora says that Villa Nova's sausage pizza is a must, and said whenever I can visit her after this pandemic, we are trying it. She's been pretty spot-on with her tastes so far to me with her recommendations.

I have another friend who told me she'd disown me as a friend if I tried Giordano's (jokingly), so I never tried them.

weird. there's another place called Edwardo's which isn't as known nationally but it's the first kind my family would get growing up and it is also delicious. the guys who founded it were going to expand with Giordano's but they fell out with the owners and pilfered the recipe. They have fewer restaurants than Giordano's so the quality control may be better. Nancy's was the other rival that drove the stuffed pizza revolution. I didn't like theirs as much.

So, I'm not sure what your friend's beef is with Giordano's but it has the best stuffed overall IMO. Lou Malnati's is often posed as the rival for Giordano's but they have different appeals so I don't consider them true rivals.
