Unfamiliar with how Germany is set up.

Is it the British/Canadian style parliament where the party with the most seats forms a government and that party leader becomes the Prime Minister/Chancellor/what have you?

More or less, but often parties that don't reach 50% individually join up together so that they reach 50% in total

Minority governments aren't really a thing here, I don't think

Is there another party the Greens would be able to join together with?

And how do the Greens lean over there?

The CDU (the one on the left in the diagram) most probably

They lean left for the most part. Not as pro-EU as I'd have liked, but you can't have everything

I hesitate to refer to the AfD as 'legitimate', but Germany has multiple viable parties, correct

our US history books are going to be interesting. "for 200-400 years there were only two parties and occasionally people bitched and fussed for new parties but all that happened was the weird 2000 election vote dilution."

A mixture of fatigue, scandal after scandal in recent weeks, and their nominee for chancellor widely being seen as the less competent of the two potential nominees (as well as the process itself being long and unnecessarily drawn-out)

They're somewhat decent on social issues and also support stuff like digitalisation (which is severely lacking here).

If it weren't for their economic policies I could see myself giving them more consideration

note that getting the "most" seats doesn't actually matter. a coalition is formed between whatever parties with a combined >50% of the seats agree to form a coalition, and the chancellor is usually the candidate from the party who got the most seats out of the ones in the coalition. for example in 1969, cdu/csu got more seats than either of the other 2 parties, but the other 2 (who, combined, had more seats than the cdu/csu) agreed to form a coalition.

Yes, it's the colors of the EU-level parties. The conservative European People's Party with CDU/CSU is light blue. The far-right Identity and Democracy Party with the AgD is dark blue.

OK, so I took another look at their positions

I don't disagree with most of them, but I do disagree with how they seem to think small government will solve all their problems. There are cases where it definitely would (same-sex marriage is an example) but there are situations that, imo, require more government intervention, not less (eg reducing benefits with tax credits)

Also, practically speaking, every time I read about them in the news they're taking stances that are pro-corporation, which definitely doesn't endear them to me >_>

They're having trouble leaving the CDU's (Merkel's party) shadow, as I see it

Goddamn I can't even imagine being in a country so cool. The libs in the US literally rehabilitated george bush before they forgave ralph nader, the greens are probably never going to make any significant splash, and we will just continue surging rightward until we collapse. Good at the beginning, but steadily getting worse, especially once vaccines started getting rolled out

Mainly cause we're so behind compared to countries we'd otherwise laugh at for their handling of the pandemic

yeah it's like
all of their views related to money are too extreme for me, but i agree with almost 100% of their other views
but given how often they've entered coalitions with the conservative pieces of shit they seem to care more about hurr durr economy than y'know, civil rights n shit
