Doom 64 was a totally different game, to be fair.

Doom PSX was the best console port of the era, sure, but that's not really saying much.

It wouldn't be surpassed on consoles until Doom Xbox Live Arcade on Xbox 360

Its just everyone praises Doom 64 more for some reason

no one mentions the PS1 being superior for the time

As someone who actually had Doom 64 back in the day...

It was very, very different in atmosphere from the other Doom versions. Much darker, creepier and honestly a lot more intense.

The weapons sounded incredible (especially the shotgun).

The game itself was rather poorly designed, though. Level design in particular was just nutty.

Youre comparing enhanced ports of two games to what is basically a whole new game running on the engine, not really fair

I forgot they even ported it for PS1 lol

But Doom 64 definitely deserves credit for being an entirely original game. I never even got to play it until a few months ago because I never owned a N64. I was playing regular Doom on PC so I wouldn't have cared about the PS1 port at all

Doom 64 is actually on Game Pass, since Microsoft literally owns the IP now

Also, the PS4/X1/Switch ports of Doom 1 and Doom 2 have downloadable mod / fangame support now. There's a surprisingly good selection of free full game downloads.

the psx port of doom also runs at like half the framerate of the pc version

theres really no reason to play it like that anymore but if you like the minor level changes and music, people have remade it for modern sourceports and you can play it if you own the pc version of doom2

A lot of us Doom-heads really didn't appreciate how much Doom 64 deviated from the PC version. Simple things like the Imp's not having mouths, and the shotgun not animating the pump action really got under our skin. If you were a PC-buff, you wouldn't be caught dead praising Doom 64.

However, over time I've learned to appreciate it as a new installment to Doom with some pretty good levels. It was definitely better than Final Doom.

Doom 64 is a modded port, it still used the ID Tech 1 engine that was also customized.

mods arent technically their own games.

such as Half-Life: Counter-Strike, CS was a mod that used the HL1 engine.

That's why I said it's a decent game with some good levels. I didn't just say "Well at least it's better than Final Doom" cause yeah Final Doom was just expansion pack nonsense.

I think Doom 64 gets credit lately mostly because it got basically zero credit back then, and for a lot of people it was a bit of an oddity that was hard to find and play unless you resorted to emulation.

It's super weird that Doom Eternal rather heavily pulls from it, though. Even the Unmakyr.

I will say, though, that Doom 64's general atmosphere is about as good as FPS horror could get in the mid-90s.

Yeah, but the way the lighting worked (lots of glowing floor edges just barely illuminating the room) was legitimately spooky as hell. Add to that the creepy/slow OST and the unusually punchy sound effects, and it almost comes across as more of a survival horror game than Doom.
