Yes, in YugiOh 5Ds

Was honestly a really good show despite it being a kids show and having non violent themes in it.

I would recommend that you watch it. Ita on a streaming service somewhere. I think Hulu or HBO Max

The blimp wasn't anything special, it was just a temporary setting like the boat. In fact, they might have dueled on more than one blimp over the course of the show.

YGO 5D'S, which *was* a weirder concept although it was a half-decent DS game.

I always hated how everyone at the time deemed 5ds card games on motorcycles as too wacky but forgot (or more likely didnt know) that earlier than that in gx they launched cards into SPACE and years later jaden who designed them as a child went to go get them so he could duel aliens
but motorcycles is too wacky

GX was inherently goofy so they could get away with a lot of the weird twists. The series was conceptually similar to the fan dub done for the lulz. 5D's afaik was more thematically similar to the first YGO run where it was intended to be more serious.

Plus with GX that was something that came waaaaaaay later whereas the motorcycles are literally in the posters. When you start GX, you don't know how far off the rails it's going to get. 5D's kinda shoves it in your face.

the aliens was not waaay later its where neo spacians come from i think its season 2 maybe? comparable to where battle city comes in the original and its easily the most iconic part of GX for neo spacians alone (trust me people fuckin LOVE neos to this day for whatever reason)

I do agree that gx was def goofier and so it prolly got away with it but fwiw its the english version thats so goofy the japanese version plays it a lot more straight.

Season 2 of GX *was* way late. They were introduced in episode 62 in a series with 180 episodes. Compare this to the bikes both being a central gimmick AND introduced at the start. Plus the only really wacky thing about the Neo Spacians is their origin, they're not much different than other cards in the series.

thats why I agreed with you, I just wanted to bring it up

I still argue that they didnt appear way late, the god cards don't show up untill episodes in the 50s but no one says that the god cards showed up waaaay late in OG

That's a weird, forced comparison. First, you're talking about cards introduced many episodes earlier in a series that ran much longer (so, relatively speaking, it takes up less of the run).

Otherwise the viewership numbers for YGO! DM were likely far higher than YGO! GX (and GX was so far ahead of 5D's that most peoples' -- by which I mean people who had watched DM -- knowledge of 5D's is just the posters) and they watched further into it. Personally, I checked out either after or near the end of battle city. I watched most of the first season of GX then, for whatever reason, I caught some episodes from season 2. I imagine a lot of people are like me who didn't even realize there was a third season of GX >_>

Plus the bikes were just a fucking weird concept that didn't go well with a card game. You can nitpick this and that, but thematically it just wasn't a fit. Meanwhile something like the Neo Spacians were very much like what the show had been doing from the beginning. And it's a lot easier for people say, "Yeah, fuck it, I'll go with it," when they've already watched a season with other crazy shit. I took one look at 5D's and was like, "Nope." Had it looked like they were playing the whole thing as a goof, I might have been interested. And honestly, the DS game wasn't that bad. They just picked a really terrible gimmick that's very out front which is why people are much more likely to make fun of it.

im talking about how 5ds was recieved by people who definitely watched gx but still didnt want to give 5ds a chance, as the years have gone on 5ds has really become one of the most popular series among YGO fans and it just shows that people back then really should have just given it a chance because it is great and card games on motorcycles totally works if you actually watch lol

They really butchered that one really cool arc in season 2 though.

Ever since the ZEXAL update in Duel Links I've been thinking about starting to watch that series as well.

If you're arguing that something is popular, that suggests that far more people like it than dislike it. If everybody who was inclined to dislike it didn't bother watching it all, then the like-to-dislike ratio improves. So even though fewer people watched 5D's than the previous ones, if it is popular -- which, honestly, I've never heard anybody claim up until now but I checked out of the anime and haven't even followed the CCG in a few years -- it's just because you're down to the die-hards at that point.

Granted, if by popular you actually mean "well-known," clearly it isn't. Most people who followed the YGO anime franchise probably never even made it to GX because it burned off a lot of fans by the end of YGO! DM.

once again this is a weird blanket statement that doesnt ring true for all sorts of things

and of course ygo burned off lot of fans after the first series, most series work that way and it doesnt mean we are down the die hards, none of us are watching the pokemon anime right now, a lot of people fell off after the first series but to say that pokemon is down to the die hards or that any of the series after the first arent popular is just wrong?
You yourself fell off of yugioh after the start and thats fine but yugioh has been thriving in the time you werent looking, just cause you werent in the loop doesnt mean the franchise is dying lol

also "well known" is such a goofy term here its so incredibly vague
the vast majority of stuff we would consider well known in our respective interests are never gonna actually be well known by so many people, if you said the last of us wasnt well known you'd be a dumbass, but if you pulled a random off the street they probably dont even know what that is because they arent in our sphere of interest.
yugioh and 5ds are very well known in the card game sphere and thats just a fact, of course if you arent into card games i wouldnt blame you for not knowing

"Thriving" is a bit of a stretch, since it's nowhere near as big as when it was a fad. It's doing well, in the same way that WWE is still doing well despite having only a fraction of its former audience.

To be fair, even among gamers, The Last of Us isn't going to be as recognized as other titles. I know PC and console gamers who blank-stared me when I mentioned it, and this is despite the fact it's been a bundle item at times and I'm pretty sure at least of the people I talked to had to have owned it.

Within gaming, there are titles you expect pretty much everybody to know but you have to be pretty deep into the hobby and in specific areas to know about other titles. I expect just about every gamer would recognize Pokemon and Call of Duty. I would expect that most gamers would know God of War. I'm a lot less sure when you get down to things like Last of Us and BioShock.

Yeah the latter parts were pretty wacky but I think that goes for all of them. They get really over the top against the main bosses. ZEXAL was even crazier. I remember 5Ds was the one that never got dubbed the whole way so I had to switch over to the Japanese version to finish it. Yu-Gi-Oh! is the only anime I watch dubbed because I grew up with it like that. I haven't watched past ZEXAL though, I was waiting till they dubbed all of VRAINS then just forgot about it lol.

I loved ZEXAL. Even by YGO standards it's very extra with the hairstyles etc. And has arguably the best villain in the entire franchise. And he isn't even the main villain. The final battle against the actual big bad is utterly ridiculous, and 5Ds had set the bar pretty high on that.

Zeus posted...

It's because 4Kids went bust during its run. They never dubbed the final arc and to this day it still hasn't been done by anyone. So if anyone wants to watch the whole of 5Ds you either watch the entire JP version subbed or switch over like I did.

GX is my least favourite one and Jaden is the worst protagonist. I coulda sworn I watched the whole thing dubbed but yeah the Yubel arc wasn't done. I had to switch for that too. Goes to show how forgettable that crap was. I just checked why and it's because they wanted to start doing 5Ds asap. Even shitty 4Kids realised GX was no use. Irony being of course they rushed to do 5Ds and didn't finish that either. What a mess.
