Seems to be largely bullshit:

First time I've seen this. But I can guarantee it's probably bullshit. If it is really county by county (and it appears to be) my county should be dark. They hate the vaccine. HUGE hotbed of hardcore Trump Voters.

Yeah, that's one issue. They have state level data and project it to county level using demographics as predictors. Makes the states look far more homogeneous than they likely are.

The other issue is that they accidentally globally doubled the hesitancy rate!

if nothing else, the scale is highly misleading. it makes 40% look like 0%.

Get a linear scale in place.

Doesn't look nearly as bad in the fixed image.

You have it backwards. Darker is more likely to get the vaccine.

I know I've said this before but once you realize the media just peddles doomerism nonstop you can't unsee it. Almost everything they've been saying about the vaccination process in the US turned out to be bullshit.

I read through that whole thread and can't find the "bullshit." The corrected map and the original map don't look vastly different. Fight over the details if you want but the lighter areas are still lighter and the darker areas are still darker.

Republicans in this topic grasping at straws to shoot down a story that makes the red states look stupid.

Yes I did. Even for NYT it would be a difficult task to get this data for every single county in the U.S. so clearly they developed a methodology to estimate it. That's what the word estimate means. And it's fair to be critical of that methodology but when I was reading that thread, I was thinking that most of the points raised were just common sense. Do they think the author was unaware that the state level results were too "clean"? This kind of thing is expected in an approximation.

What's the big deal, or rather, what's your argument exactly? People in Tennessee want the vaccine just as much as in California?

The media sucks but it's never for the reason that conservatives think. This is just a flimsy gotcha.

You should definitely still be worried about vaccine hesitancy.

I mean, they accidentally globally raised the rates of hesitancy by a factor of 2.

The county estimation is just bad communication. Fine for certain specific purposes, but not really for the purposes of public facing data, because those estimates are likely way off.
