The main issue is that I have to have someone in the car with me or supervising me. I make a mistake and they keep telling me what Im doing wrong. I wish theyd stop doing that. I get where Im going wrong mentally, physically fixing it is different. I learn through repeated failures that I end up fixing myself through repetition. If you dont tell me anything new, all youre doing is distracting me and making it harder to learn. But they just dont know how to stay quiet.

Yeah Im aware, but that doesnt help me. Right now were in a safe location, my mistakes arent bad. Im not gonna be a menace on the road until my control is closer to excellent.

Passengers telling the driver how to drive is always annoying as hell, but take it as practicing on maintaining focus

i dont need to tell you this, but one of the highest causes of death is accidents on the road, so its an important process, and whoevers teaching you is just trying to make sure you're being safe

At the moment the biggest thing is turning, in which Im not turning hard enough, soon enough. So it is important, but its something fixable through repetition as long as Im somewhere safe. I need to get used to the car in general, braking, accelerating, turning. When my teacher starts repeating things I know, it doesnt help me get used to the feel of the car any faster.

Like I get the theory, I just need to do it.

do you have the option of just doing permit driving with somebody you know instead of dealing with a driving instructor who probably feels obligated to backseat as much as possible?

Monotone okay would probably be my go-to, but my teacher is a family member and Im using their car. I dont wanna make them decide against teaching me.

They arent mad or scared that Ill scratch or hurt their vehicle even, just poking at me for doing it wrong. Id understand if they were on edge for those reasons, but theres no real risk with what Im doing.

Its because I know them that Im so bothered. I feel like if it was an instructor I could just tell them to stop talking.

Youll get the hang of it. Driving instructors are just gonna hammer it in because they have to share the road with you. All the finesse will come when you get the license and cruise by yourself. Dont sweat it.
Im sure I will, but I feel like its kind of impeding my progress, but I suppose as others have said, its a way of practicing my focus.

Ive actually told them a couple of times that them talking isnt helping and that I just need to do it, and that I know where Im going wrong, but they just wont stop.

Telling where you're going wrong is the point of an instructor though. They shouldn't just nod their head and let you fuck up. Driving is dangerous and you could kill others if you mess up so you absolutely need to be able to handle it, and not buckle when stressed as other drivers are 100% dicks, 100% of the time and at the slightest hesitancy/error/whatever will be screaming for your head.

The issue was that they had already told me plenty of times where I was going wrong. I wasnt suddenly making new mistakes. I just needed to transfer the mental information into physical information.

Well, depending on what the issue is sounds like they should just take you to a quiet road/parking lot/somewhere to practise whatever the issue is then tbh. Only so much good telling you can do over practising it.

It was a parking lot for the OP post, it was fairly safe, but they felt the need to keep repeating the problem even if it was extremely evident.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Stuff like braking too fast/hard, being in the veering in the wrong direction, not making turns sharp enough. So important stuff. It wasnt useless the first few times I heard it, but they kept going well after I already knew where I was going wrong, and was just failing to perfect it.

How many hours of experience do you have? See if they're willing to take you to a relatively secluded part of town. Trial by fire isn't the best idea when you're already nervous and have to worry about a ton of traffic.

Total, maybe 10? Maybe less. But like 3 hours of that was over 4 months ago, if that really matters at all. Truth be told, where they had me practicing today had very little traffic, but some is still very different than none, at least for me.

Stop fucking up then? If you know what you fuck up at then you need to get better at it.

Honestly it doesn't sound like You'd be a good driver since you can't seem to improve.

Um... if youre having that much trouble then I hope youre on a track.
Parking lot, same difference. Today I was turning well enough that apparently it was thought to be acceptable to practice in traffic. Im not saying the mistakes I was making werent basic, its because theyre basic that it needs time rather than further speaking.

Maybe when you fuck up you should verbally admit to what you did, before the instructor tells you.
"oopps stepped on the break too hard"
"too much gas"
"that was a bad turn, i started too late"

That way the instructor knows you know and he wont botther you.

10 HOURS?! My drivers ed lasted like 2 and thats counting lunch. Just go to your local go kart track and start tearing it up. Trial by fire.
I can be a really slow learner when it comes to execution. Youre right that a go-kart track would probably help. No consequences for crashing means I dont have anxiousness.

I learned how to drive from two different people.
A coworker in his brand new Mazda 3 with standard transmission and my dad in an automatic Chevrolet Lumina.

Then I perfected it with my first car (a second hand Civic 99 LX).

After that, it just became second nature. I only drive stick.
I hate automatics.

Uh... I wouldnt say theres zero consequences for crashing. I mean, dont crash. I would just go drive anything you can get your hands on. Go Kart, Riding Mower, 4 Wheeler, anything and everything. If you can find it, drive it.
I should say, fewer consequences, if done in a good location. Even my practice area doesnt leave me much lead up, which makes me brake sooner. Im a fearful driver which is not what I need to be.
