Soaring Through Azure Sadness
Discovery

A couple of sections really stand out for me in Soft Collision-- the intro, with those little chord stabs and that really cool moment at 0:05, which gets me into the track right away; and the progression (1:27) right after what I see as the chorus of the track, which is really nice and fits this more chill section. It's pretty great work by Kaufman all around. I don't think it's as purely catchy as some of his other work (the part that's probably catchiest, the chorus section, is my least favourite part of the track!) but in some ways that makes me enjoy it more.

linkage-alter also has an intro that grabs me pretty quickly. One thing I love about that bass synth that underpins a lot of the track is the little stutters and hiccups it throws in. Otherwise, it's really just playing octaves a lot of the time (admittedly something I enjoy)! But those things, along with the little flourishes and runs it does on occasion, really contribute to the overall feeling of frantic movement also carried by the drums and piano. That's what really stands out to me when I listen to this track-- its constant, nervous motion. It makes moments like 1:16 pop so much more, and then the drums come back in again, panning left and right, tumbling and stuttering. The way the track enters and exits this section, and in particular the way it builds up afterwards at 1:46 as it returns to the loop (and those four chords specifically preceding it), are probably my favourite part of the track.

I don't have an exact memory of what I said about this track during its VGMC13 run, but I think I enjoy Soaring [preposition] [something sad in some shade of blue] slightly more now than then (I think I was reasonably positive about it then!). I think I focused more on the feel of the opening and the chorus then, but again it's the stuff around it-- the guitar line starting at 0:42, the part starting at 2:46 that goes 6+8-- that really catch my ear. The track evolves in some interesting ways before coming back to a pretty good payoff in the chorus.

Fuse Man is.. pretty decent! Yeah! I don't have a ton to say about this track. I think this OST gets a bit of a bad rap for its aesthetic, but it's never really bothered me. The composition here suits the franchise well. It's pretty catchy.

There's one objection I have with Discovery-- it's the breakbeat. This track has some really cool moments, a strangely mysterious, wandering track for something with its title. The breakbeat kinda pulls me out of that reverie-- it's a bit too fast, energetic, reminiscent of music I don't actually want to be reminded of at that moment. It shows up a lot in this track! It's the main reason why I've never been fully absorbed by it (something that confounded me back in VGMC14), even if I find a lot to like about it. (Phantom doesn't run into this problem with me-- but I'll talk about that when the time comes.)

Tox and I were talking the other day about how all my formerly-expressed least favourite VGMC tracks that are Sakuraba tracks are actually Shinji Tamura tracks. Here's a Shinji Tamura track! Look, I don't really do the fiery "this song sucks" stuff at this point. This is fine but I don't dig it a whole lot, in kinda the same way Nefertiti is. It goes for some tropes I might have enjoyed in another context, but they don't hit the mark for me in this one.

Three super good tracks, and three that are decent but I don't really stick out imo.

Except for maybe Fury Sparks, why is that one so much fun? This is not Motoi Sakuraba. This is thump thump thump thump simple rock guitar with a short loop. Yet I wouldn't mind at all if it won.

Rose Gun Days - linkage-alter [7.0]
Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure - Soaring Through Azure Sadness [7.5]
Kaze no Notam - Discovery [8.5]

MATCH 1:
I still enjoy Soft Collision, [6.5] having used it in my first full-length VGMGG, but it's definitely like an artifact of my developing music taste. Gotta give it up to virt though--will never not be impressed by the man's work ethic.

linkage-alter is really, really close to being something I would love, but it's pretty inconsistent and starts to lose steam after the two minute mark. Just kinda hitting on those same beats 'til I'm numb and not paying attention anymore. Those cool moments are COOL though and ultimately eke out the match for me.

MATCH 2:
Here we are, back again. Azure Sadness has got some really solid moments, like the refrain followed shortly by the solo part at 2:47. Also love that weirdo hymnal bit at 0:23 and 2:25. I like this more and more with each listen, and suspect the score could climb higher should it go the distance into round 2. It will

Fuse Man Stage [6.0] is marred by its production, above all. I can hear it as a regular PSG tune in my head and I like that imaginary version of the song a lot more than this one. Actually yeah, here's a fan arrange to support my case: https://youtu.be/ggj-WdeCFpY
The core song is fun and faithful to classic Mega Man, but the EDM's just not for me. Do see the appeal, though!

MATCH 3:
Discovery's amazing, full-stop. Kaze no Notam/Notam of Wind, for those who don't know, is about piloting a hot air balloon through oversized, empty environments, letting the wind push you along toward the goal as your only input is to inflate and deflate the balloon. I bring that up because I believe context is important and can elevate appreciation for the music. Once you know what Kaze no Notam even is, how it plays, what it looks like--the pieces start to fall in place. I especially love the foley sound that starts around 1:38, which isn't unlike a hot air balloon decompressing. Context!

Fury Sparks [5.0] is music and I can listen to it with my ears. It would sound like an early 90s anime OP if you changed around the production and added vocals. "GO! BLINDING FURY SPARKS (TV Size)"

Soft Collision was perfectly serviceable, but it didn't stand out for me compared to the ocean of songs in a similar vein. Meanwhile, linkage-alter... okay. I think VGMC is messing with me. I often get frustrated with VGMC-ers for picking "interesting" music with weird-ass rhythmic patterns and dissonances tossed in all over the place even if they sound like absolute trash, yet here I am, picking a song with weird-ass rhythmic patterns and dissonances tossed in all over the place. I listened to it loop three times. I'm liking it. Send help.

Azure Sadness - God am I a sucker for classical guitars. Vocals feel out of place, but they're barely there, so I can forgive it. I also appreciate they take the guitar away for a bit after the vocals - really adds the oomph when they come back. I guess my main criticism is this doesn't sound like "Azure Sadness"? Fuse Man stage is rock solid, good even, but -- oh jesus christ I'm picking things based on being "interesting" again aren't I. It's too late for help. I'm beyond salvation.

I forgot I even listened to Discovery right after I did, so...

Now featuring ratings and rankings from my big VGM spreadsheet!

Soft Collision (9, rank 393) / linkage-alter (7.5, rank 1406)
Soaring Through Azure Sadness (10, rank 48) / Fuse Man Stage (6.5, rank 1841)
Discovery (7.5, rank 1366) / Fury Sparks (6, rank 2349)

Soft Collision has a scratchy, rubbery, borderline glitchy feeling that I tend to enjoy before turning into a very melodic, bubbly dance song. Really enjoyed this one! linkage-alter has ANGRY PIANO which I also enjoy, plus it's very varied and intense. I liked both of these!

The First Thing got first place in my 174-song ranking, but Soaring Through the Sad Blue Skies (or whatever the official English title is) got third! There isn't much left in this contest that's ranked higher in my sheet (though there are at least two...). Fuse Man is super catchy! Fun to listen to.

I don't like Discovery nearly as much as Phantom (or last year's Solitude), but it's still an engaging listen. I used to like Fury Sparks more than I do now - and 6/10 is still above average! - but it has to work harder to spark my interest (dohoho).

Rose Gun Days - linkage-alter
Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure - Soaring Through Azure Sadness
Tales of Vesperia - Fury Sparks

MATCH 1

I tend to like Jake Kaufman songs. Even across a variety of different music styles from Shovel Knight to Mighty Switch Force to Double Dragon Neon, there's typically at least one song from him that I like quite a bit in the styles that he works with. It's usually catchy melodies that draw me into his music, and while that's definitely present in other Mighty Switch Force songs, it's unfortunately pretty absent for me with Soft Collision. I think here, there's more of an emphasis on interesting chord changes, and while I can appreciate that and even actively enjoy a song, at least in part, for that reason, I don't find it something that really appeals to me in this case. So this song is basically "fine, but not particularly noteworthy."

I still think linkage-alter is probably one of my favorite Rose Guns Days songs! In fact, off the top of my head, it probably is my #1 favorite in the game next to Mission ~No. 023~. The dramatic piano lines are, perhaps unsurprisingly, the highlight of this song for me. The violin accompaniment is really nice as well. Really, there isn't a dull thing about this song. Everything just blends together really well. And I usually focus a lot less on rhythm than I do on melody, but this is one of those songs where I actually really like the rhythm in this song. I guess the extra 2 beats from it being in 6/4 (sorry if I'm explaining this wrong lol, I'm not the best with music theory) gives the rhythm this sort of punchiness that I think is pretty cool.

MATCH 2

Soaring Through Azure Sadness is a song that I think is pretty nice, but not something I really love. I'd probably give it somewhere in the low-mid 7's if I was attaching a numeric score to it. It has a nice melody and good instrumentation, but I can't really give it more praise than that. Sounds kinda negative overall, but I will say that this is one of the better Gurumin songs I've heard from the soundtrack and definitely my preferred Gurumin song in the bracket! For the record, my favorite song I've heard from the soundtrack is To Make the End of Digging.

Fuse Man is really nice too! Nice upbeat synth melody. A bit close between the two, but Soaring wins here.

MATCH 3

I can't say much about Discovery, unfortunately. It just doesn't really do anything that's appealing to me.

I should have qualified my comment on JRPG rock that I mentioned during my Nefertiti write-up a bit haha. Fury Sparks is one of those JRPG rock songs that sound fine, but I don't see them as anything special. That said, because it's still a style I typically like and the song doesn't do anything that I actively dislike, I still think positively of it overall and it beats out two of today's songs, one of which being its opponent.

Ohhhhh... all this time I had thought it was loweffortmemes who nominated it. Ermm... actually, just checking to see if you were the "original" nominator?

Just to confirm, I was indeed the original nominator of linkage-alter in VGMC13! I'm not sure if anyone else nominated it before that year without it making the bracket though because that was my first year participating.

Mighty Switch Force! 2 - Soft Collision:
Rating: 6.5/10
A Ranking: 50/64

Rose Gun Days - linkage-alter:
Rating: 7.0/10
A Ranking: 43/64

Another pretty close one. Both feel just slightly out of reach of greatness for me. Soft Collision has a cool thing going but it doesn't do that much stand-out to me and it just sorta feels like it'd be more of a forgettable track on an OST I'm pretty sure is pretty good. linkage-alter does some super cool things to me (if you're gonna do crazy all-over-the-place stuff, using piano is one of the best ways to get me to enjoy it) and has some nice tones but also has some parts where it sorta loses me. It's mixed but it's also still definitely good (I enjoy like 90% of songs in this contest lol) and more memorable than the first to me.

Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure - Soaring Through Azure Sadness:
Rating: 8.8/10
A Ranking: 6/64

Mega Man 11 - Fuse Man Stage:
Rating: 8.5/10
A Ranking: 14/64

It's day 2 and I'm already voting against a support. Joy. While I also definitely think Gurumin has a few songs I enjoy more in there, Azure Sadness keeps up the amazing feel that most of the OST has and has some really nice melodies. I find a lot of MM11's OST to be super underrated, but I'm just a guy who likes his synths I guess. Fuse Man is easily my favourite of the originals though, it's got a super strong melody and does really cool things through it as well. Not for everyone, I guess, and it could use being a bit longer maybe, but super solid. I feel so bad letting it out this soon but, granted, it's bound to lose here anyways, Gurumin's a very earned 1st seed.

Kaze no Notam - Discovery:
Rating: 6.0/10
A Ranking: 58/64

Tales of Vesperia - Fury Sparks:
Rating: 9.0/10
A Ranking: 5/64

Discovery honestly does some things that keep my interest through some of it, most notably some of the transitions and ends of measures, but then it takes a trip into "eh" for me at a point. Simply put, it's just not as much my kind of thing, but I can at least respect it and enjoy some parts. Fury Sparks was a big shock to me. Like, wow that's strong. It's kinda everything I felt I wanted Nefertiti to be, really great guitar lines that are memorable and stand out from the rest of the song. Just a super "cool"-feeling song. I have it ranked over Azure right now, not sure if that'll stick, but it's a delight. Definitely an easy vote here, at least.
