There was a terrible impaction.

Names in case you need them or you don't want them spoiled for a game you haven't played yet:

1-2 - Mia Fey

2-2 - Turner Grey & Ini Miney

3-2 - Maya Fey (theft) & Kane Bullard

4-2 - Pal Meraktis, Phoenix Wright (hit-and-run), and Trucy Wright (panty snatching)

5-2 - Rex Kyubi

6-2 - Manov Mistree

E1-2 - Akbey Hicks

E2-2 - Horace Knightley

L-2 - Robbs and Muggs

This is quite the lineup, but there's a pretty clear favorite in this group. I decided to expand beyond just murder for some of these victims since you're actually hired to solve them.

Yeah, this one's pretty clear. Even if you remove 1-2, I think E2-2 is pretty clearly above the rest. Turns out that victims are a lot more interesting when you have a case to know them!

Take out both obvious candidates and this is fairly difficult. Most of these victims have a big shroud of mystery over them, even after the entire case is over. I do like 4-2 Meraktis, who really took an active position in the case. I appreciate the victims who aren't innocent at all. It's always a nice turn of events.

1-2, but Turnabout Corner's victim is a bit interesting, true. Because he was supposed to be the real killer!

1-2 almost feels like cheating considering most of her good content occurs long after death, in terms of the series at least.

Voted E2-2.

I'm really curious if anyone will for some bizarre reason vote for the two random muggers from L-2, probably the most obscure named characters in the franchise

This is pretty easily either 1-2 or E2-2. If you go by "who's a better character overall," then 1-2 is the clear winner, but if you go by "who is a more interesting victim" I might go with E2-2. Since I can't make a decision I'll just vote for 4-2 because it's funny that Phoenix got hit by a car.

1-2 is definitely bolstered by the content that came after 1-2, but it was still really effective at the time. I remember being mildly shocked at the change in tone from the goofy, lighthearted 1-1 to immediately what happens after.

1-2 is easily a Top 5 plot twist in the franchise, killing off the tutorial character pretty much immediately was crazy. Even if a lot of the shock is kind of invalidated

This is true, but it was also really unexpected to kill off an important character so early into the first game, which is what makes it so impactful.

I'd probably vote for 4-2 or E2-2 otherwise. I do like totally unsympathetic victims since they're relatively rare for the series.

I don't even like Mia in PW1 but it's still 1-2.

4-2 is definitely my pick out of the more generic options.

Yeah, this is clearly 1-2, considering it sets the tone for the series, and she ends up getting lots of development anyway thanks to the Kurain Channeling Technique.

5-2 is definitely in second place due to being an actual character in case 1 of his game.

6-2 has got an amazing pun going for him, so third place it is.

Its easy to see why 1-2 is running away with it, but thats wrong and its actually 6-2. 1-2 invalidated its own shock by teasing it before it happened, all of the promotional materials for the game, getting kind of side-tracked from that persons death by everything else that happened, then it kind of brings them back which harms the impact.

6-2s victim is incredibly sympathetic because the nature of their death is quite possibly the cruellest in the entire series so I ended up feeling much worse for them than anybody else.

I knew nothing about these games plot-wise when buying the first one (there was promo??), and I had absolutely no idea about the 1-2 twist. It completely threw me for a loop and was probably the moment that first hooked me into the series, so I have to give it props for that. I'll agree it's lessened later on but the moment itself still hit really hard.

Yeah, me! I was a Phoenix Wright fan before coming to B8. The specific thing that got me into it was seeing previews in the UK Official Nintendo Magazine back in early 2005 and thinking that looks awesome. I watched all the trailers, I was hyped. There was a lot on Gamespot I think, for online coverage Capcom actually went pretty hard for it before release. I even wound up importing it from the States because I didnt think it would release in Europe, which it did months later. Of course by that time it was a word of mouth hit and got a bunch of TV ads so it did pretty well at launch in Europe, unlike America where it flopped out the gate and had to rely on online word of mouth to succeed. Most people I knew were aware of it before it came out.

So Ill chalk this up to a cultural thing!

I was a Day 1 adopter of AA when it released in the US, but I didn't look at promotional material. Actually I think I watched a trailer a while back, but the only thing I remembered was Phoenix going "You're lying, damnit, and I can prove it!" Which was a badass line (that never appeared in the original game). Then I forgot about it until I saw that the lawyer game had gotten a very positive review from GameSpot. Went out and impulse bought it, and the rest is history.

So yeah the death of the victim of 1-2 is just in this trailer.

I learned about Ace Attorney from Board 8...I remember reading a CYOA. I remember having really distorted views of certain characters, like Edgeworth as kind of a burly, unrefined bully and the Blue Badger as a superhero. On a whim, I put it pretty low on my Christmas list (I was still pretty young in 2005!) and I ended up getting it. I remember M&L: Partners in Time was my top request and PW1 blew that out of the water.

I definitely followed a lot of PW promotional stuff after playing through all of PW1, learning a ton about PW2 and PW3, probably more than I should have. Even played the fan translation of 3-1 (dolores willows fans, where you at). I didn't see any sort of visual promotional material on PW1 and I was pretty tuned in on gaming news.

I guess they did spoil 1-2 in that trailer but it completely flew over my head and/or I forgot about it by the time the game came out, which works just fine for me.
